Patrick Kennedy and Icat (Sunroof solution)
First go to Pelican parts and get the sun roof repair article. Next read the general over view of the sunroof opperation.
Both of your problems are most likely related to the Two microswitches at the top of the motor in the back or possibly a half dead switch on the console.
Patrick I had your exact problem. It turned out that I was missing both of the limit switches at the top of the motor. There is a sticker back there with the wiring diagram on it. Make certain your switches are correctly wired. Un- mount then and use a zip tie to hold both switches closed. Now try your sunroof switch. The roof should both raise and lower (be careful as the limit switch is not functioning and you can strip gears if the clutch is too tight.) If this works then you know that it is an issue of adjusting the limit switch positions (something I haven't figured out yet.)
Cheers,

Thanks Matthew. While it is a novel honor to have my name included in a topic, I appreciate your attempt to come to my rescue.
I took possession of the Pelican sunroof article many moons ago, and have been been in relatively close e-mail contact with it's author, Clark Fletcher as well. As well as several other posts from well-intentioned units.
I have confirmed both microswitches just aft of the sunroof motor for location, continuity and general overall health and functioning. I also am inclined to believe that it is the console switch as I was fooling around trying to hard wire a radar detector and had piggy-back clipped a "switched" wire coming from under the sunroof rocker switch. That's when the sunroof problems began. I have since redone that setup, and tested the rocker switch with a multimeter, and I thought everything tested out fine. Admittedly, electronics are not my strong suit. Now I'm wondering whether the wire I piggy-backed onto is funky (looks OK, just missing 18" of insulation - which I taped up) or if something is amiss with the switch. I was following the shop manual testing the switch, but alas, may have done a sketchy job.

I was wondering who would be so cheap as to tape up 18 inches of bare wire instead of using a new piece! Thanks for the clarification.

I'm with Patrick, kinda neat to look on the board and see your name in lights! I'd like to take this oppertunity to thank my mom and dad for having me...
Seriously though, I've got the article as well. Haven't had a chance to do diddly on the sunroof as the new 968 mirrors and door handles have taken all the free time. Now that they're on I'll likely work on the sunroof next. Here in Texas a sunroof is nice to have, but kinda useless in the summer - it's just too hot. But with fall coming on the time's right. Thanks for the tips Matthew.
See ya,
