Why are 18" wheels not recommended?
I own an '89 951, with the factory 16" clubsport wheels. The previous owner had a set of beautiful 18" 5-spoke Kahn wheels on the car before I bought it, and recommended to me that I bought the car without the wheels. Apparently he'd gone through 3 leaky steering racks in the year after he installed the 18's, and the Porsche dealer figured it may be the big wheels that did it. I'm not convinced of this. When I bought the car, the front M030 koni's were adjusted right down to the bottom of the threads. My mechanics theory is that the wider overall rolling diameter of the 18's, coupled with the ultra-low suspension, caused the rack to angle upwards from the center of the car towards the wheels, leading to the leaks. He figures that the 18's would be fine, as long as you didn't slam the suspension. Any thoughts? I also have heard that Porsche officially doesn't approve the use of 18" wheels on our cars. Is this why? What's the general consensus, have any of you 18" wheel owners had problems? Please help, as I'm looking at buying those Kahn's if my mechanic is right. Thanks.

I had a set of 18" wheels as well and experienced a steering rack leak shortly after. The rack was probably original so who knows if it was related. I noticed that you are in Vancouver Ian. I have a set of 3 piece turbo cup style 17" wheels for sale if you are interested.
