Did I pay too much? 1986 Red 951 w/ 42,879

I'm new to the list but have been following many of the threads. I am very impressed with the wealth of knowledge and the commradre(did I spell it right?) contained in this forum. My praise to each and everyone who contribute to the list.

I bought an 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo with 42879 miles back in August, 2001 for $7,000 with no service records. I quickly changed the belts, water pump and brakes (rotor and pads for the front, only pads on back) for $2,500.

So the total cost of the car was actually $9,500.

How did I fare?

In addition....

Interior (6 of 10):
Cracks in the dash, driver side bolster wear, missing plastic pieces for seat recliner, rear window defrost not working, AC not working, radio not working, missing spare tire and compressor.

Exterior (8 of 10):
Hood painted by previous owner (reason unknown), normal road chips, small gash in passenger side door

You probably did OK butI'm sorta worried that the interior problems might signal something else left unattended in the drive train.

Figure out what the deal is with the air-con. If left unworking for extended periods the seals dry out and it becomes very expensive to ever get it back on its feet. At that point you want to think about pulling the whole system for weight savings. But if you drive it in heat and a suit to work .....

The rear window defrost could be simple. Check the wires to the hatch struts, the struts, then the glass heater array. All can be fixed pretty easy. But I wouldn't bother, outside of just wanting things to work, unless you are in a climate that you really need it to see.

You will love this car and become a fair shade tree mechanic in short order. ;)

Since you've paid for your car, don't think back and just enjoy it. :)

I agree, don't look back. However....

Might want to ask yourself how a car with 42k on the odometer has so much wear on the interior. As little as this one was suppose to have been driven, I'd expect much less wear and tear on the interior. This, coupled with the "missing" service records would lead me to beleive the odometer has been rolled back.

Thanks for your concern. It did bother me about the bolster wear with low mileage. I did run a CARFAX report on the car and the report did come back clean. I just thought it was due to neglect and misuse.

Especially, the cracks in the dash. I heard that these cars were prone to dash cracks but there were about ten SIZEABLE cracks running up and down the dash. It bothered me so much that I bought a dash cap and covered the unsightly dash.

Asahi (the name of my car) has a nice home now. ;)
