Deltagate wastegate question
 
I just ordered a Deltagate wastegate from Huntley Racing. It seemed like a good deal, as it's about half the price of a Tial. However, a local tuner in Vancouver (who works mostly with Eagle Talons, Supras, etc), has just warned me that he's had nothing but problems from Deltagates. He says that the valves are weak, and they all seem to fail. Has anyone out there heard the same? Anyone had any problems with a Deltagate?

I'd also be interested in anyone's advice as to what other wastegates to consider, if they agree that the Deltagate isn't a good buy. The Lindsey Racing wastegate has the obvious advantage of being bolt on, but is more expensive. All opinions are eagerly anticipated, as I would need to cancel my order very soon.

I had no problems with mine at all, and have had friends run them on some Supras with no issues.

The hardest part is getting it in there at a decent angle, and making some flanges and such to install it.

I've had mine for a while. No problems at all, and very slight but noticable improvement in turbo lag. Full boost builds up about 250 or so rpm quicker in the high gears. Works very well with my Apex-i boost controller.

Mine vents off into the atmosphere, small "muffler" installed there.

Ianm, were you talking to Tecknic? They told me that too, but I noticed that on ebay as well as import online classifieds, a good number of people were either selling the Deltagate that came with their bolt-on turbo kit for better units such as the Tial while others selling Tial to replace "that mediocre Deltacrapgate". This is the reason that I decided to get at least a Tial or better such as the Greddy or HKS wastegate when I upgrade. Of course the Greddy and HKS are quite more expensive, but quality and reliability reflects the costs.


I think that Road Race Engineering has the best prices on Tial wastegate.

The 46mm wastegate is a direct placement for the factory 930 and 962. Does it the 944 use the same/simular unit or similar mounts/flanges?

Mark, I was actually speaking with a guy named Lowell Foo, who has a shop in Port Coquitlam. He works a lot with Resnick. Anyways, I think I've got the real scoop now. I talked at length with Derrek at Huntley Racing. He admitted to me that the original Deltagates did have reliability issues. However, the new Mark II units are apparently much more durable, and they've had no problems reported from their customers. I've decided to stick with the Deltagate. BTW, the Tials that Huntley sells are the 46mm units.

Ianm, which shop is it? I have heard good and bad from both Technik and Resnick. Both have dyno, Resnick charges $200/hr while Technik is $150/1st hour and $100 or so for each following. Resnik also wanted to charge me $1500 to build endcaps and weld them onto my new intercooler core, installation not included in the price. I cannot use any Deltagate as the diaphram body it too big for my turbo setup, I need a narrower one like the Tial or HKS. The better units also better resisting Boost spikes, as I will be running about 20psi.

If you need welding/fabricating of anything related to your turbo, talk to Andy at Precision Performance (I think that's what it's called). I can't find their number at the moment, but I could get it for you. I've heard that Teknic's dyno is somewhat broken, and doesn't produce torque plots at the moment. You might want to ask them about it. Plus, their machine isn't capable of plotting air/fuel mixture versus rpm, which is really what you need when if comes to tuning. Lowell Foo (604-785-8704) is apparently the best tuner in Vancouver, and uses Resnick's dyno. He can also fabricate whatever you want, including hard pipes, custom flanges or whatever. I don't know anything about Resnick's fabricating abilities or pricing. However, Resnick's dyno will give you all the data you need for properly tuning your car.

Ian is Precision Performance located somewhere in Vancouver area, and is a machine shop? There is Andy at Specialty Engineering in New West that does a good number of custom high performance and race vehicles.

That's right. Specialty Engineering, that's the place I was thinking of. I've never been there, but everyone seems to mention Andy as being a person to turn to for high performance customizing work.
