'88 944 Turbo S questions

Hi All,

I am completely new to the list and not yet a Porsche owner. I have an opportunity to buy an '88 944 Turbo S. Yes it IS in fact a turbo S. I have seen the original window sticker with the options etc listed.

The car is has had one owner and been serviced by a local Porsche dealer since it was purchased there new. It has 56K miles on it and is in beautiful condition. It has all the service records and is bone stock.

I have driven the car and I think it is awesome! The timing belt / water pump and clutch master were all replaced at 52K miles by the dealer. (have recipts)

The asking price is 15K USD. What do you think?? I read on the list here that someone suggested Kelly bluebook. They have the price at less than 8K USD. ???

Also I ahve read the FAQS as much as possible. Does anyone have any other specific recomendations for things to check?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff ... buy it! If you don't I'm interested!
If I were you I'd do a pre-purchase inspection etc. Sounds like a nice car and Kelly Blue Book is probably not a good source to use in this case.
I'm looking at an 87 with 12k documented miles for $12,500 (asking!).

15k for a low mileage one-owner S is pretty good - people have been asking higher, but I think that's a realistic price. Kelly probably doesn't know diddly about the S versus the standard 951.

A pre-purchase inspection by a well qualified mechanic familiar with the cars is worth the money, sorry I can't refer you to someone in PA.

56k miles is good, I think - enough miles to keep things exercised. If it passes PPI I'd make an offer of 15k minus what it needs (tires? hoses?).

Jeff,

Is this the "Silver Rose" 88 from the classifieds located in WV? I am not sure where in PA, you are located, but if you are around PGH.--Manage My Car, Raysich, C&G--can all do pre-purchase inspections. Good Luck .

If it is the color you want and the motor mounts and ball joints are good this within the high end price. Keep in mind that any car that old will need expensive this and that but these cars are worth it.

If you don't buy it, I'm betting someone else will, and pretty quick. Cars like you describe don't last long. Have the inspection done and BUY that sweetie!

Are you in E or W Penn?

Looks like a nice car priced appropriately. The mileage alone is worth $2,000. With the recent service work done, and if the body/paint is perfect, it's tough to find them any less expensive. IMO it's better to find the right car that's been taken care of and pay a little more for it. It's money well spent.

Thanks all for the replies!!

The car is not going anywhere fast (unless it is being driven!!). It is owned by a buddy of mine who I think has priced the car fairly but I wanted to chek with the experts.

He knows I have to sell my current ride / toy which is a '91 MR2 turbo. I will mis that car!

Thanks again!

For comparison, prices of Turbo S's listed in Panorama this month. Worth noting, these cars probably have been well kept and are being offered at a top dollar due to the advertising venue:

89 951, 126K recent full maint, GA $16,500
88 951 S, 100K, immaculate, NC, $15,750
88 951 S, 111k, Excellent, Rose car, $15,500 OR
89 951, lotsa mods, 138K, $10,900 MI
89 951 98k, mods $19,400 RI
89 951 41K race car or street, 30K in mods, $24K CT

These just go to show what a great value your LOW MILEAGE example could be. Mileage is the biggest factor in pricing these cars, stored cars can be 20+K, while hi mileage usually is closer to 10K..except when advertised in Pano! Yours sounds like it is a good deal.
