I think this is it:

Cost is $74 which is not bad. We need to have Rogue or Tom M look at the data sheet and make sure the counter is capable of capturing the pulse.

This is Eric's response when I asked him how he wired it.

I wish I could remember exactly. But, yes I wired a transistor between the signal and counter. If I find my sketch I drew I'll let you know. I think the counter needs a 12v trigger, so I used the dme output 5v knock signal to trigger the transistor to open the 12v circuit to the counter. I also needed to add a resistor to limit the current to the transistor to stop it burning out.

I have to say though it does work very well.

Cheers

Eric

It doesn't look like it would be fast enough to reliably catch the knock events. The data sheet says 60Hz max, while the knock pulse is around 1000Hz.

You might of been looking at the wrong datasheet. High frequency mode is 5kHz.

Edit: http://www.redlion.net/Products/Grou...Docs/01025.pdf

COUNT INPUT:
SNK mode (DIP switch 1 off, internal pull-up to battery)
VIN High Min = 1.25 VDC; VIN Low Max = 0.45 VDC
IIN Max = 5 μA; VIN Max = 3.6 VDC
Count Speed: (count on negative edge)
High freq mode (DIP switch 2 off): max 5 kHz @ 50% duty cycle
Low freq mode (DIP switch 2 on): max 50 Hz @ 50% duty cycle

SRC mode (DIP switch 1 on, internal 20 kW pull-down to common)
VIN High Min = 1.25 VDC; VIN Low Max = 0.45 VDC
IIN Max = 5 mA; VIN Max = 28 VDC
Count Speed: (count on negative edge)
High freq mode (DIP switch 2 off): max 5 kHz @ 50% duty cycle
Low freq mode (DIP switch 2 on): max 50 Hz @ 50% duty cycle

I probably was looking at the wrong one - I just took a quick glance.

5kHz should be fine for picking up the knock events.

I added the link to the correct datasheet.

What would be the recommended way to connect it? According to the bottom of the datasheet both of the high frequency modes are showing the use of a transistor.

Page 3, "current sourcing output."
The transistor is in the KLR.

So it looks like when the voltage gets above 1.25VDC and then below 0.45VDC it makes a count. Is that correct?

Yes, that is just the built-in hysteresis to prevent false triggering.

So is there a maximum you would want to go on the counting speed? It looks like the CUB7 counter is cheaper but is 8 digit and counts at 10kHz, same low voltage input.

Assuming it is also edge triggered, then you can have a faster counting speed without worry.

Yeah it is count on negative edge.

Here is the datasheet for it. http://www.redlion.net/Products/Grou...Docs/01024.pdf

65 bucks for the backlit one with free 2 day shipping.

So what is our best option at this point?

Have you guys checked eBay yet? I'm sure there's a cheap Chinese solution on there.

Forget cheap Chinese electronics, you'd be better off trying to listen for knock and counting on your fingers.
