Is play normal onrear axles?

I have a strange sound coming from the rear river's side axle, when I move the passenger side from side to side it is tight and has maybe a half inch play with force, when I move the driver's side, it's loose and has at least 3-4 inches of play and when I push it towards the tranny, I hear a click sound like somethings loose, do I need to replace it? Is it broken?

Pull it and see how it looks. That's really the only way you'll know for sure if it's bad or not.

So you are saying that the only way to tell is by taking it apart?

sounds like it's toast. is it an aftermarket axle?

Check to ensure all of your bolts are tight. The CVs have some side to side (not rotational) play built in for suspension movement. If the noise you are hearing is a clicking sound, then the CV is on its last legs and it is only a matter of time. The good news is that if it is the CV, it is relatively easy and cheap to repair,

The axle has been like that for months, but it's only lately that it's started bothering me, the driver's side has the clicking sound the passenger one seems to be fine, tomorrow I'll have the tech check the bolts, and yes, they are stock....
