Looking to get into a cheap racing series
I would like to get into racing, but I don't think I could aford to race a porsche. I'm looking for something I can do cheap, but has a lot of events I can perticipate in. I was think of something along the line of getting a CRX. I know thereare a lot of things I could run that cheaply in

Race Car
Formula V, and other open wheel SCCA racing really isn't to hard to get into. I think it's something like $5k to buy a car and another $10k or so to maintain and race a car for a season. I actually asked about this at Watkins Glen last summer to a guy who races.
There is also a company that goes to these events and lets you rent a car for the weekend and race competitively, much less money involved but you'd still need the entrance fee and rental fee and have your SCCA license.

If you haven't heard of it, there is a 944 spec series on the East coast. You're in a perfect spot being in VA. They're running w/ the NASA group and have several races throughout the year.
Check out http://www.944cup.com/
You can start w/ a 944 or 924 (which are cheap) and go from there. I've seen track-ready, slightly modified cars for sale ~$7-8K. Since you're already familiar with the 944 handling and engineering, making the switch won't be too difficult.
BTW, they've also started a 'Super Cup' class for turbos, but your car is a tad too modified...
Have fun.

The absolute best way is Spec Miata racing. Check out www.specmiata.com for more info. This is my 4th race car in my 11 years of racing and it is by far the most fun and the easiest on the check book.

Have you considered "slot cars"? lol
Best bang for the buck might be shifter carts...
