I was told by a 951 "Racing Expert" that the manual rack isn't as quick as the power rack. He advocated diconnecting the pump looping a line and filling it with steering fluid.

I had a true manual rack and would NOT advise to go that route unless you had to for race regs!

The street/production manual rack is approx 23:1 ratio, the power rack is around 18.8:1.

The factory Turbo Cup and motorsport cars used a depowered power rack to have the quicker ratio, but at the expense of higher effort.

I have driven both the street and motorsport manual racks on track, and you do notice the difference. I actually prefer the street manual rack as I like the lower effort and do not notice the increase in steering input that much.

I run a depowered, power rack on the street. It can be a little pain when parallel parking on a steep down hill road. Other than that, I'm not bothered by it at all. A manual rack will be easier due to the ratio difference.

Have one with the manual rack & it's a pain until moving...
...and if you autocross, forget it

I don't know where you heard this. I've NEVER heard of 944 and leaky power steering!

lol.

Is there anyone here who doesn't have a leaky power steering reservoir or line?

I started with a manual rack on my race car but i'm currently converting it back to PS ,an expert driver who did a couple of laps in my car assured me that it would be quicker with PS.

Is he going to pay for the cost of the conversion if its not faster?

Having raced 944s for many years with both power and manual racks, I sure would not say one is faster than the other.

Unless you are driving in several hour enduros where driver fatigue is a concern, the choice between manual and power comes down to personal preference of the driver.

Way faster around a track with power steering.

The bigger your tires the faster the power steering is.

I can't imagine why you'd want to go to manual steering unless you had some rule that mandated manual steering

ive driven street manual vs. power back to back and though the manual is ok, not real noticable 90% of the time, the 10% you do notice it kills it for me. Ive had my share of ps leaks to fix, but its just part of owning these cars. If i removed everything that leaks on this car i would be left with a set of seats.
