It is the oil sealing crush ring, 1 on each side of the oil feed tube for the turbo, keeps oil from blowing out of the connection...

It SHOULD be there, but as you have seen....

Is there 2 of them on the outside of the banjo bolt (maybe the last person to take it all apart, didn't put the ring back in the right place?

if you search the part number on DCAuto.com it will pull ALL the drawings up that use it... (I limited my search to late 944 models, but if you do the search on their home page it will pull all drawings from all models that use them...)

And yes it SHOULD be there... OH and it's not rubber, it's copper....

There are 2 rubber rings on the BS covers... one on the front cover and one on the back cover (plug)... and they should both be there as either one missing will cause oil leaks at their associated end of the cover.

I guess that o-ring is used to blank off the Turbo feed for NA cars in conjunction with a 'sealing' bolt.
PET does not refer to it's use on M44.50/51/52 engines, on these engines you use the 2 crush rings and a banjo bolt.
