Default Goetze or Porsche OEM piston rings?

I am in the process of buying a bunch of parts to put my motor back together. A few years back I was rebuilding a previous engine, and bought a set of OEM Porsche rings from Andial for $60 per piston. Paragon sells Goetze rings for about $130 for all 4 pistons - about 1/4 of the price of OEM. I've done some searches, and see that the Goetze rings are slightly different than original Porsche rings - such as the top compression ring only having a chrome plating on the outside surface, whereas the oem top ring is entirely chromed.

Anyone have an opinion on oem versus Goetze piston rings? I don't really mind spending the extra, if the quality is superior.

I've got Goetze rings installed now, but haven't started the car yet. If you're building a street/DE car, I can't imagine that you would run into problems. The Goetze rings looked exactly the same as the OEM rings I removed.

I'm not sure what you mean by fully chromed unless you are saying the original rings were chromemoly steel alloy and not plated. The Goetze are the same rings the dealer will sell you today as OE. The Goetze rings have been the only OE ones available before I even got into the 944 game. The oil ring has changed also but it is a better design than the original IMO. TRW makes rings also but never supplied them to Porsche as OE.

Why would you use goat rings? I have MUCH better results with metal ones, but hey, to each his own...

JK.. the goetze are fine...

We stock a custom ring set that makes much more sense then the Goetze and the Porsche rings. Give
us a call and we can explain the benefits.

I would advise against Goetze. Poston rings are the most important friction parts in your car and there is a good reason why factory used the rings it did and not goetze.

My experience with goetze rings for bmw 528i when rebuilding engine:

The black ring is new Goetze ring, the other is BMW OE ring.. I returned Goetze and will never get goetze rings again.

I've heard of a few folks having issues with aftermarket rings. My father-in-law reringed his engine with those rings, and it tore up the bores. Next time around we used OEM rings, and there were no issues. The OEM rings also did not have to be filed, they were gapped perfectly. I usually think OEM stuff is way overrated, but not in this case.

I'm curious to know what Lindsey offers. I'd give them a call per Mike's post, if I were you.

Is there any place that sells original porsche 951.103.901.03 rings (made by TRW) under $168 per set?

+1 on the Lindsey custom rings. I put them in the motor of my race car last year. After six races the motor has zero blow-by and it pulls like a freight train. I couldn't be happier. I hope you get the chance to discuss this with Mike Lindsey before you decide.

+2 on the Lindsey file to fit rings. More work to install but worth it.

Thanks for the input. I ended up going with the Goetze rings from Paragon. Results so far are very positive. I've now got 2000km on motor, and it has sealed well. Motor consumed negligible amount of oil during a recent day at the track.

I used Goetze rings with my rebuild and they work great. Don't expect a perfect fit out of the box, I had to gap many of them slightly. I have 2,000 miles on my rebuild and I have never had a hint of problems. No smoke ever, good performance.

I just ordered my rings from paragon. Was the gap with yours an issue?
