I damaged a seal trying to install it like this. It made the seal concave when it was pressed in and I knew it would end up leaking. I wasted three new seals trying to get it in correctly.

What I ended up doing was using the pulley gear turned around and stacked one of the old seals between the new seal and the pulley. That made it drive it in from around the edge instead of against the flat face of the new seal. I also got the new seal started first which was the hardest part. I think I only had it started about a mm into the bore.
