WTB: Big Blacks or Big Reds (BOUGHT)

If anyone has big black or big red front calipers to sell for a good price, pls let me know. Also looking for good condition rotors to go with the calipers. Prefer non-drilled (ala 928 S4), but would consider cross-drilled.

SamGrant951 11-12-2009 05:10 PM

Check Sunset Imports for rotors, IIRC the 911 turbo 3.6 (drilled) rotors were cheaper than the blank 928 GTS rotors. Hence why I have the drilled rotors up front...cheapest I could find anywhere. I heard the prices recently went up on the calipers - not sure about the rotors. But the used prices for the calipers still command $$. I bought a set for $450 I think and repainted them red, that was over a year ago.

call L.A. Porsche Dismantlers... They ain't good for much over there but brakes, YES.

You might also check out the adapters sold here:
http://www.944v8s.com/Products.html

They're for adapting the LS430 Lexus calipers (4x42mm) on. By using those and a Boxter S rotor you end up with a "Big Red" setup for cheap...

Hey everyone thanks for your replies and pm's. I haven't been able to get on here for a couple days due to the web site issues, but will follow up with everyone as soon as I figure out what I want to do.

I didn't realize that new calipers were only $218 each. So, I guess this thread is a little premature. I want to verify prices for new calipers and rotors, and then take it from there. Are they GTS or S4 that I need? I though the big black calipers were from the 928 S4. Wouldn't the rotors be as well?

odurandina 11-15-2009 12:49 AM

928 GTS = big blacks... my 968 required adaptors and a bias valve to complete the installation.

not sure if 944 is the same... in any case,

you would be doing quite well running 928 S4 brakes, regardless.

Big blacks are the same a big reds except for the color. You can use the rotors from the 993 Turbo (Big Reds) which is cross drilled, or the 928 S4 (Big Blacks) which is a solid rotor. For some reason, the solid rotor for the 928 S4 is more expensive then the 993 Turbo cross drilled rotors. So, most choose the 993T rotors but then you have the cross drilled spider cracks to keep an eye on. All the adapters are available from Racer edge. The brake lines. rotors and adapters are also available from Paragon and Lindsey racing.

You need to flip the bleeder screw on the factory calibers and you need to be aware how they mount by looking at the direction arrow and the caliper piston size, they can be mounted backwards with bad results.

I would also suggest you change your rear bias brake valve.

SamGrant951 11-15-2009 02:16 AM

928 S4 rotor is like 944 turbo S IIRC and not a "big black"

928 GTS = 911 turbo 3.6 rotors which are used with big blacks/big reds. 928 GTS are blanks, 3.6 turbos are drilled. Drilled are cheaper new.

Pretty sure if you want to use 993 twin turbo two piece rotors you need a different rotor hat (lindsey sells them)...they are more expensive but a bit lighter I believe.

I changed my bias valve to a 928 5/33 a few months after I did the swap.

I believe the one with the adapter hat is only needed on '86's? Two piece still available for either I think.. On my list for February.

Is it possible to use the original 16" wheels if you upgrade to big blacks/reds?

vt951 11-15-2009 10:05 AM

Ok, so Brian is saying what I thought was the case. Big black calipers are the same as big reds, just painted diferent color. I also thought the 944 turbo S came with "big black" calipers and cross drilled rotors. I think what I want is basically the turbo S setup, but with non-drilled rotors. Are the 993 turbo or 928 S4 rotors bigger diameter than the 944 turbo S rotors? If so, might I have problems fitting inside my 17" wheels?

I know I need to put in the 5/33 proportioning valve to increase rear brake pressure.

tconn 11-15-2009 10:14 AM

The 951 turboS came with the same calipers as on the 928 S4 with solid rotors
These are not the big blacks.

Big Blacks came with the 928 GTS.
