Wossener V's J&E ????

I have used Tom C. spec pistons which are made by ARIAS, they had coated dishes and coated skirts. Dont know the metal content but they worked just fine in a 968 block with 104MM stock bores, and 8 valve head. Ran that engine at 16psi all day long with NO problems!
I have also used Wossner units from Racers Edge in a 968 block 104MM stock bores and 8 valve head. These pistons were not coated at all and not only were they lighter than ARIAS pistons they looked and felt like a more precise, better built piston. Ran that engine at 16 psi all day long without any troubles.

Yeh thats really interesting and now i think of it i have herd of tragity from the wrong coating but never herd of a drama from no coating ..
Boost feen are you absolutely certain they were not coated ??they coating is often very lo key
do you have the pistons on hand to take a photo?? a pic of the hounds tooth seats would be nice too

Saw some coated 16v Wossners today. They were not like the ones Chris W showed some time ago. Well not in the colour of the coating at least. These were a pretty light grey as opposed to that Charcoal finish of Chris'. Perhaps the coating could have been overlooked?

The 16v pics I posted were for a steel sleeved block....different coating! The Alusil coating is much lighter and has a little more texture to it.

Well if the coating was like a clear coat than I guess there could have been one on the skirts but these wossner units had a nice shiny brand new aluminum look all the way around! They are installed in a 968 engine in a glacier blue '89 944 S2 with 5R LSD and KONI suspension. However I will pull some pictures and let you guys see what you think!

Fair enough. By the sounds of it, Boost Feen has used uncoated pistons in an Alusil bore block. That shouldn't work for long should it?

Well as i said befor Pat I've never seen any real accounts of it being a problem.. as long as it's kept oiled .
the wrong coating is drama i have a set of non coated pistons here and never been brave enough but i might re visit the idea .

Very early turbo pistons did not have any coating at all and they did not cause any more wear issue than later, coated pistons.
I also use a set of Mahle/Andial 104.5 pistons and the machine shop that checked & balanced the rotating assembly of my bottom end says the coating on this sort of pistons was used only as a layer to protect them when they are shelved.

A stock aluminum piston would not survive even in a well prepared Alusil cylinder bore. The pistons used without coating were not stock aluminum. Aluminum has an affinity to itself. Whatever piston manufacturer you use, simply follow their instructions as to clearance and sizing based on your bore material.

Wossner pistons!
Plasma coated Wossner pistons speced out through Racers edge for a 104MM standard bore 968 block with 2.7 head! This engine is in a '89 944 S2 as seen in photo. Runs great no hickups at all.

gee that has got me scratching my head ...I was so excited last night i called m y buddy who works at SPS local eqiv of JE and he said he had seen about 3 or 4 real examples of big failures of uncoated pistons in alusil bores .
any way POWER TO YA I'm impressed ..
So the block is not nicoseal treated ?? that would explain it ....
