Default Torsion bar delete. Is it safe?

The upper an lower mounting for the shocks doesn't look very strong to me. Will they handle the extra load if you remove the torsion bars and put on coil overs?

How much weight will you save on this mod (how much does the torsion bars weigh) ?

Technically you are actually increasing the unsprung weight by half the weight of the coil springs...but the overall weight might be just ounces less.

OK, next week Friday, after X number of beers, you and I are going to discuss whether the weight of a torsion bar is considered sprung or unsprung.

Ok, thanks.

How much does a 25,5 (?) mm. torsion bar for a 951S weigh ?

Don't know - but about the same as the coil over that you'll use to replace it.

I agree with Chris - because of the hinge of the control arm, and the torsion bar is at the pivot point, the torsion bar would be completely sprung weight.

I would say torsion bars are sprung weight, because their mass is moved very little relative to the chassis (compared to the spring and coilover housing mass that moves with the wheels). Can I have a beer now, too?

Sure - meet us at Watkins Glen for the first annual Sprung Weight Classic beer fest on Friday Sept 11th, all beer consumed is added to your sprung weight....until you 'spring' a leak...

Ooh, we should take our Lemons car out there for a shake down! Kind of a long drive from Cincy, though.

I've asked a lot of people at the track about the torsion bar removal. Everyone says it has worked fine for them. The only failures I've heard of are the bolt at the bottom shearing or fatigue failure due to it not being installed properly (torqued down flush to the trailing arm).

In the 'old days' some folks used to use washers so space the mounting point out for srping clearance - the Racers Edge mount fixed that problem (and made it work with standard sized rod ends)
