951 vs 968 brake cooling deflector
Browsing through PET this morning, I see that the 968 has a two piece brake cooling deflector - 1 piece on the control arm and an inverted V piece that bolts onto the strut (in the same place the 951 aluminum deflector bolts on).
Does anyone know if the 968 ones are any better?
I don't have access to a 968 - but could the difference be because of different vent holes (or the absence of them) in the front bumper cover?

I had them on both my n/a and on my 951 and they work well i think. The stock 951 deflectors arent really a direct flow.. they just sorta deflect air in the general area of the center of the hub. These seem like a more direct method. Whether or not they are actually better is anyones guess, but i figure they wouldnt have put them on the 968 unless they worked. Also the GT3..etc use a similar concept of control arm mounted scoops.
I believe this style scoop was originally derived from the 951 Cup cars, but not 100% sure on that. Here is what i believe is a scoop on a Cup car, as you can see the angle of the scoop is much more aggressive, the leading edge is almost parallel front to back with the car. I do not think the Cup cars used a 2pc scoop though.
BTW, the bottom part of the scoop is not a direct bolt on unless you have 968 control arms or aftermarkets that have the tabs. You can make a very simple bracket however that mounts to the swaybar droplink stud to mount them. The top portion of the scoop is a direct swap for the aluminum deflector.

I've had this setup but the problem is that the bottom deflector gets ripped in half or off completely on lowered cars and if you ride some kerbs. Good idea for many cars though.

I believe that the 968 has the bottom deflector / top scoop setup as a result of the front bumper / oil cooler configuration changes. The 968 engine oil cooler is close to the same location as an S2 and the Tiptronic oil cooler is a mirror image of the engine oil cooler on the driver's side. A S2 also did not have the front bumper scoops like the 951 did from '86 to 89.5. 89.5+ 951 also deleted the front bumper scoop. Techno posted a picture of the Cup car lower a-arm deflector, the strut scoop is the same as a stock 951 and the Cup cars also used the standard 951 front bumper scoop.
I used the stock brake cooling package on a mostly stock 951S for years on the track with Pagid Orange pads with good success.

That bottom deflector height should not make a difference with lowered cars, the height of the control arm is basically always the same with some exceptions to the geometry of the arm on lowered cars. If using ultra low profile tires then i can see it making a difference. The lowest edge is a bit beat up on mine, but i drive my car daily.. it has rubbed on those stupid movable speed bumps they put at auotmatic gates and once on the Brooklyn Queens expressway where the pavement is horribly uneven. They are pretty flexible and forgiving.. only about $20 each also.

I have a set of 968 scoops waiting for me at the dealership, looking forward to trying them out!
The white Porsche-script on my big reds turned yellow at the last track event so I could use better cooling!!

Ive had the 968 scoops on 4 different tracked/raced 944s going back to '93. Local guys/shops started retrofitting these onto DE'd 944s as soon as they came out on the 968s. Bottom edges will hit pavement every once in awhile but Ive never lost one before.
Certainly helps cooling somewhat. Not as good as a ducted "cool" brake kit, but cheaper and you dont have to deal with the problems of the ducting.

I recently purchased Turbo inner fenders and installed them on my S2, so I am now trying to correctly fix the gaping holes in them. I believe I will be going with 951 brake scoops (portion from bumper to inner fender) and then with these scoops shown above.
However, my car being an S2 and the oil cooler in the way...some modification will have to be done to fit the passenger side brake scoop.
Are these items Sunset items or?
