What's "the rod bearing mod"? Putting in a 3 piece cross member? Not joking, never heard this one.

(time passes)

OK, bad guess. Not crank bearing, rod bearing?

I will try to find the link later but search for Michael Mount rod bearing mod for our engines. He has a post for it.

Well worth doing to me if your engine is apart. Stock rods or aftermarket.

I'm doing my Pauter rods.

Default 968 Turbo RS - Fitzgerald #4

A friend just made me aware of this thread so thought I would share some info on one of my cars. This is one of the 4 right hand drive 968 Turbo RS's built by Fitzgerald Racing Services in the 90's. Those of you outside Australia may not have heard of these cars which were constructed with the assistance of the Porsche motorsports department using genuine factory parts.

They were intended primarily for track and rally use and competed in numerous events, remaining competitive until recent years. Specification is very similar to the original 4 LHD factory Turbo RS cars. There's more info here for anyone whos's interested: www.turbors.com

What a beauty! Is that the one that was for sale earlier this year? (or late last year) I remember seeing it on car sales and instantly pitching a tent in my trousers.

Thanks! No that was the #3 "RSR" car, it sold for around AU$110K I heard, mine is #4. One of the original 4 factory 968 Turbo RS's is also currently for sale (see http://www.gmundcars.com/cars/4068/Porsche_968_Turbo_RS). They were asking 750,000 EUR!

These replicas were talked about on here some years ago if you search through the 968 forum.

Porsche gave a hard time to the Heimrath dealership in Canada when they learned they were converting regular 968s into 968 turbo S replicas using factory parts, so saying the Fitzgerald cars were built with the assistance of the factory is a pretty bold statement that you might want to back up with documented information.

It might be a bald statement but I've talked to Peter Fitzgerald quite a bit about this and don't have much reason to doubt him, he took moulds off the real cars for the fibreglass parts, he was very close to the Motorsport department in those years, one of 'his' four was actually the car he ran in Bathurst as a CS and was later converted to a RS, porsche built it specially for the event, it only became a road car later.

You mean Porsche "built" the CS for the Bathurst race then Fitzgerald converted it to RS spec himself?

Yes, I think it had even less than a normal CS. It won the race but was penalised on a technicality. My memory is that the same car ran in targa Tasmania, had a few magazine articles written about, it's been restored in the targa livery.

Well the fact that Fitzgeralds were able to purchase many of the RS parts directly from the factory when they were not a listed item says it all really. You don't get that that type of cooperation from a manufacturer unless you have their blessing. Peter was racing their cars at the time with their support which obviously opened many doors not available to a dealership.

I heard the first car was originally a special factory order in Australia before the CS models were officially released here. The other 3 cars are genuine CS delivered new from the factory and converted by Fitzgeralds in 1994/95.
