Without the hose that attaches to the shroud at the back of alternator and wraps toward the front of the car, you're pulling in really hot air from around the turbo, especially at idle or slow cruising speeds. As the alt spins, it pulls air from the rear. The hose feeds somewhat cool air into the alt and prolongs the life.

If hot air is being sucked in, in it's current state, it will suck in MORE hot air with the cone off.
