Default The REAL 27/8 thread

OK, the previous one did not go so well, let's keep this one civil!!

In leiu of all the fantastic cars seen at this years Fest, I think it's time to tackle a round of upgrades. I'm looking for info on what it's all gonna take. I have done some preliminary research, but now that I know a lot of you in person, I feel that maybe I can get some unbiast opinions.

Budget is yet to be determined, so that answers that question. Here is what I think will work, but feel free to correct me. This IS my first Turbo car, so feel free to school me when I am wrong.

I of course want something that pretty much will bolt up, and a DBB turbo is not that important as I dont mind a few hundred RPM diff. in the lag. This has made me want to go with the 27/8. But what about the 60-1 unit? Is this a bigger or smaller turbo? What about installation of that one, does it require more fab'ing??

I assume that 55# injectors are good for 350-380hp keeping them around 80% duty cycle. And am planning a MAF/Chip setup from Vitesse. When ST was doing his tuning, that was on the cars with the SMT6 right?? I would love to have that kind of adjustability and tuning available. Does any of that interfere with my Zt-2 setup?? If it does, I may hold off on installing the rest of it so I am not doing stuff twice.

I dont need to copy anyone's existing set-up neccisarily, but would like to stick with a proven setup.

I will be dropping the motor the fall/winter for a refresh. Mainly bearings, baffle, pickup tube, etc. And some powder coating of course! Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Hopefully they get my membership crap figured out, being a super user is great and all but.... I renewed a month ago!

You are in luck. I have some data from years back on a K27/8. I will be testing some new products on a 951 with a K27/8, then I'll be removing the K27/8 (maybe a few other items - MAF, PB, Injectors) and will be selling them as a package with a dyno chart. (This is a one time deal on a used turbo).

The PiggyBack does not interfere with the Zeitronix, it works with it. If you like to discuss further, email me directly. The used K27/8 should be off the car in Oct.

Sounds like you are right in my time frame! Thanks John!

Still open for discussion in the meantime!

27/6 is a little small for my liking. It will spool quick, but does not have the top end velocity I'm looking for. I would still like to see the chart thought with your list of mods.

400hp: Once you get your attatchment figured out, plz delete that huge one above just for future people looking at the thread. Thanks.

Spidey,

I don't know anything about those turbos, but you might want to talk to Dan Jauch (he's running a 27/8). I know he dyno'd about 360 rwhp (apparently with some room for improvement with a better chip), and from the passenger seat it feels very strong and spools quicker than predicted by some.

Yeah, I talk to Dan pretty regularly. I am sure he will get a lot of phone calls once the install begins, so I was hoping not to bug him this soon! I am sure he will comment on this once he gets home from work anyway....

And am planning a MAF/Chip setup from Vitesse. When ST was doing his tuning, that was on the cars with the SMT6 right??
I wasn't there Friday, but FWIW I know this is what Sam Grant is running.

I would love to have that kind of adjustability and tuning available. Does any of that interfere with my Zt-2 setup??
The ZT-2 and SMT-6 should not interfere with each other if installed correctly. Sam also runs both of these.

Also although I have not installed a 27/8, I do have the 60-1 HIFI from SFR. I did have to do a little bit of fabrication to get the turbo to fit which inloved taking a little metal off the mount so the turbo mounting bolts would line up correctly. Hope that helps. Good luck and have fun.

Here is some info on the 27/8 install from Clark's that sounds pretty much inline with other's comments regarding the install of this turbo... (http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/eng-16.htm)

If you are installing a turbocharger other than a factory replacement (K26-6 or K26-8) there are some things which you should know. First, if the new turbocharger has a larger diameter compressor inlet than the factory unit (i.e. K27), the stock rubber inlet plenum boot will have to be modified and some type of adapter will be needed to connect it to the new turbocharger. Second, if the new turbocharger has a larger compressor housing than the factory unit (i.e. K27), the cooling water outlet line (hard pipe), will have to be reshaped (bent), to clear the housing of the new turbocharger. This may also cause the temperature sensor to come in contact with the bottom of the intake manifold in which case a low profile detector will be required. Lastly, you should ensure that the turbocharger you buy is a good match for your current setup. It may require a new set of chips for the DME and KLR to take full advantage of the new turbo's capability. All the things I've mentioned above are things your turbocharger supplier SHOULD tell you. However, when I purchased my K-27 a number of years ago, my supplier didn't even know that the things I mentioned above were problems. Below is a series of questions you should ask your supplier before purchasing any turbocharger.

I am also installing a K27/8 in the near future. A quick search of dyno charts showed boost building quickly around 3500rpm and hitting hard around 4000rpm... Which isnt too bad in my opinion

Mods with the 27/6? The power looks great, but it just falls off too soon for me.
