Default Rear Spoiler opinions?

I'm just shopping around at the moment and have just got a new 968 type hoop spoiler to go on the lexan rear hatch, but it got me thinking while looking at it. Those hoop spoilers sort of sit funny in my eyes. Viewed from side on, the front edge looks higher than the rear which seems to contradict the general concept of downforce. So do we think that this spoiler was just cosmetic from Porsche or do we think that it's been wind tunnel tested and provides suitable downforce??
While the photo's show the hatch not installed, you get the picture.

i think just the air going between the hatch and the wing provides some sort of downforce.

Well it's hard to tell with the pic's that I have but there is a little 'duck tail' underneath the main hoop that must have some effect, but when you see these hoops installed they point upwards rather than down so it seems a bit odd is all.

I've seen contrails coming off the 968 spoiler at TWS with moisture in the air, looked pretty cool - so I would guess they have some downforce or air grabbing quality.

It will sit better installed. I've seen them installed on the 951 and the look great. I don't know if they provide more downforce than stock but it is a nice modernizing update.

I'm sure it works well otherwise the rear would get loose at speed without them. Historically, Porsche hasn't done much that was purely cosmetic.

Of course that's what you'd assume, however I don't recall seeing that particular type of spoiler on a factory raced car. It's a nice change for sure and I'd like to see what Ski saw, sounds interesting, but I've ordered an 968rs type too just the same.

A few months ago i read some factory documentation on the S2. The wing had a little blurb about it and it said the wing channels air in such a way that it creates a high speed flow across the top rear of the car. This creates a excavating force that puts downforce on the car at speeds higher than 45mph.

So i guess the question is how closely do the replica style wings match that of the factory wing?

You could always just go with the adjustable TRS wing..

I have one of the old 944Online / KLA replica wings sitting in my closet that i originally bought for my n/a. But it will probably end up on the 951 now. Ive been tempted to buy the adjustable TRS center portion for it..but its just so damn expensive!

This is the other one I have on order from here: http://www.v-zweeden.com/index.php?cPath=298_30
It will be expensive by the time I get it shipped though it does look highly cool, especially with a 'real' c/f centre unlike another well known US brand who advertise c/f but it's just a bit of cloth laid over heavy f/glass.

That's interesting Techno D, I guess we have to feel confidant that Porsche just don't stick stuff onto the car for no reason.

Thats not a bad price for a nice looking piece like that. Only about $400 American. Shipping might be a killer though.

Actually I think that the price you've worked out there is for the centre section only. I did the same thing. The whole 6 piece spoiler is $670 US so pretty expensive but I can't remember what the AIR one is anyway. I'm also getting a c/f hood from them for about $950US. Expensive but, well, I guess I must want them.

I already have the 3 trim pieces from the KLA / 944Online replica. So i need the actual wing part and the end posts. With my luck it would get smashed during shipping!

Hard to tell from the pic because the hatch isn't seated all the way which would really help but obviously the adjustable one provide more down force if thats what your looking for. I do think that the normal one looks better and does provide some down force.

Time for a serious comparison on the track

A lot of wings on cars are designed to limit drag and not produce downforce...
I wonder if this is one of those

hey guys remember how a wing works?? high speed gas is at lower pressure than low speed gas . the Curved path under the wing is longer than strait path over the wing . you can also attach a piece of steel or poly carb to the underside of the rear of the wing for a tad more down force . or you could make wedge shaped blocks to go under it to increase attack angle .
