Is the k26/8 swap worth it?
Like the title says. I have a chipped 951, and I was thinking about swapping in another turbo from a Turbo S I have access to. Is it worth all the work?

I hope so as I have a rebuilt 26/8 on my workbench waiting to go into my '86. From my understanding we should gain 30 to 40 hp. I have a few other mods including Russell's chips but am still using the stock AFM. I hope to get 275 rwhp.

if it's cheap and you plan on doing the work yourself, I'd go for it - you'll definately have to get a new chip though and probably a 3.0 bar fpr, good boost gauge and controller. A cat bypass (or 3" exhaust) and new wastegate or shims would be nice additions too.

IMO, it is only worth it if you readily have access to K26/8 or got one real cheap. I wouldn't spend any money on a K26/8, as a K27/6/8 can be had inexpensively and is a much more capable turbo...

Rogue Ant, I'm here in colorado and have the head of my 86 944t, plan on minor port job, manual boost control, and judging price a K27 turbo. Sorry to see the weld on your beautiful stainless exhaust rusting, or is it a coated pipe?

yeah as has been stated- the k26/8 is a great upgrade but if you are going through the trouble and spending money on it i would go to a 27 something. The #8 hotside just moves the power band up higher in the rpm range and would yeild a higher hp #. Your still flowing the same amount through the smaller cold side- now dont quote me cuz im no turbo guru this is just my simple version- the 27/6 would flow more and spool faster but run out of breath up higher in the rpm range where my 27/8 spools slower but has more air up higher in the rpm's- meaning higher hp #'s theoretically but not necessarily the fastest spooling turbo around- still pretty good. New powerhaus k27/8's are around $1200 new but you could find a deal on one somewhere im sure. Keep in mind that you'll still need everything to go along w/ more air flow, bigger turbo inlet and tuning wise....

For an afternoon's worth of work it is a great upgrade if you can get it at a decent price.
While the 27 is a decent upgrade, the 26/8 won't require a MAF, bigger injectors, modified water pipe, larger silicone boots, ect. It's hard to beat a 40 WHP increase for four or five hours worth of labor and less then $600.
