i honestly dont think that cage looks that good, those welds are horrible, as the notches of the tubes were not that great, thats why they are all grinded down.

you shouldnt have to cut the roof off either to weld the top of the cage.

if your shelling out the big bucks for this car i would atleast want the cage to have some clean looking welds.

not a 951 but amature sti rally car cage build thread

^ It's because that STI's cage joints are welded with TIG. This 951's cage is welded using MIG just from looking at it. You cannot get those welds on the STI with a MIG.

A good weld does not always have to be dimes and nickels pretty. As far as cage design, a little overkill.

Car's got a lot of work! Seems to be a fun project, good luck with it!

you can get an even better looking weld with a mig on the right application .but they really aren't that bad a few of them are a little rough but nothing to nasty , it looks like the notching is a bit out and since the tube is thick mig to fill the caps is a reasonable solution. And how exactly does one effecivly weld the top of the cage it's pretty common to pull the roof . And i think it's pretty poor form to can someones major project like that

Honestly i am a welder and i would not grind on a weld as it will weaken it unless you were going to redo a weld, just leave it alone . Nice cage design though...

Well, there is another way thats a lot easier without disturbing the roof. I first saw the technique used for all the BCTC cars in England. They cut a round hole slightly bigger than the diameter of the tub where the tub meets the chassis before welding in the bottom plates. The plates are only tacked in place while the cage is formed and tacked. You then remove the plates thus allowing the cage to drop. You can now quite easily access the top for a perfect weld. lift the cage back up, slide the plates in place and finish the job.

The project is BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK

More updates soon - got my priorities realigned...the GTR has again taken its role as my baby...

BTW GT Racing flares blow a$$ for GTR Projects so we're having to reshape and create new panels that will look acurate.

Enjoy the mock up:

Yup its the single piece front end that we're going to graft a 951 nose to, its pretty much a POS but it'll do to get a working template for a mould, also looks like we're going to have to widen it by a couple inches as well:
