On a somewhat related note, is it absolutely necessary to have the exhaust off the car to have the 02 bung welded on? My only other easily accessible transportation is my bike, and it's not so easy to drive around with an exhaust pipe on that.
To do it right? Yes, but only the turbo down pipe and cat have to come out, not the whole exhaust system. You need to have the WB02 sensor pointing in an upward direction for proper reading, avoid moisture accumulation and very importantly not damaging it by hitting the road if you bottom our / hit a speed bump. Due to the best point of 02 reading you will need to put the bung on the curve by starter. Here is a link that helped me out a lot.
