New Tow Rig *496 cid* - w Pic
So I finally bit the bullet and went down and bought a new Tow rig
No afraid it's not a porsche - LOL
GMC 2500HD 4X4 with 8.1 (496cid) and allison trans
340hp at 4200, and 455lb ft at 3200rpm
Towed camper 4300 miles from midwest to west coast and back. lots of mountain towing
WHAT A KILLER!!!! If feels like cheating towing with this truck
I am pumped!!!! Now I just need to get a hold of a car trailer..... hmmmmm anybody looking to sell???
The only bad of course..... Damn it'll use some gas.

yeah, test drove diesel... didn't care for it.
Great for ultimate towing I am sure..... but very lazy to drive around in compared to the 496!
this thing will tow anything I ever will need to tow.
course I'll bet the diesel will get better than 12 on highway and ..caugh coguh 7 in town

I had a 8.1 and now have a diesel. The 8.1 is stout. I put a k&n and a programmer just for kicks. It will get similiar mileage towing or not. The allison is an excellent towing trans as it will downshift automatically to reduce brake wear. Good luck with it.

Check racingjunk.com for trailers open trailers are pretty easy to come by. The closed are too but depends how much you want to spend.
Prolly spend less on an open trailer than you will in fuel for one month

I wanted the diesel for fuel mileage, power and resale value. I have a K&N and a hypertech on the diesel that adds 90hp and around 125 torque. It is a 4x4 and I have 285BFG A/T tires. Even with the larger tires it is fun to drive. I am tempted to get the edge controller that adds 125hp.
BTW, the 8.1 with stock tires will do awesome burnouts.

I have a friend that is into modding his truck. The new Ford F250's with the 6.0 diesel are supposedly very moddable, of course, most of the high-end power mods make them really suck fuel and make it so you can no longer tow anything without your EGT's going too high. The other great things about the diesels are resale and you can start making your own fuel for around $.50 a gallon.
That being said, keep a car as a daily driver and only drive the truck when you have to. I think just about ANY car is more fun to drive on-road than a truck.

7 mpg in town?!? 12 on the highway?
That kind of fuel consumption would cost me more than $7000/yr over my diesel truck. Holy crap.
