Default Engine reseal with pics; part 1

For those that didn't see in the before thread the engine on the Arena car has come out. Enough leaks to just bite the bullet and pull it for a reseal job. Don't think that I pulled it as I'm not that good. 951and944S pulled it for me with a little back seat driving from yours truley. Got a few other items that will be on the maintenance list/upgraded. Feel free to offer words of wisdom or tell me I'm doing it all wrong and straighten me out.

Dirty engine before:

Another before. Shows 20 years/7X,XXX miles of use. Yep, that's a power steering leak.

Almost clean. Used a combination of a engine cleaner, Aluminum Bright (thanks Bret) and a steam cleaner along with lots of elbow grease using brushes and sponges. Not done yet but it's getting dark outside.

Oil Pan is not completely clean. Must have had a quarter inch of grime in some spots, really! I plan on pulling it this week so it'll be easier to clean off the engine.

Gonna have to pull out the brass bristled brush on some of the crevices.

BTW, I had to pull the turbo (got it off in under an hour, ha ha Chris) to get the crossover off. I could not seperate the 4 bolts between the crossover and the turbo, sigh. Soaked over night with liberal use of PB Blaster and used an air impact wrench. Still can't budge the 4 bolts. Advice?

After seeing Bret's work I may just have too. Well see if I've got enough money left over. Will at least polish the intake and the valve cover. Thinking of a design scheme for the valve cover that won't be to bling but still better than OEM.

Get a chisel and split the nuts, after all of this you'll want new ones anyway. If you can bust the three nuts/bolts to come off then you wiggle the crossover to see if you can break the one that goes from turbo to crossover with the welded nut on the crossover.

Engine looks great, good job, that thing was dirty!

You did what i wanted to do for a very long time, pulling the engine and having it fully re-sealed, very good choice, probably the best choice.

Looking at you're oil cooler boss, the seal is red/brown in colour, showing that it is not the updated one, the updated one is green.

Anyways, are you resealing the balance shaft housings along with th rear seal? you should do it now, the cross member is in the way with the engine in the car.

Not sure what Scott used but any good marine store should have some Aluminum Brightner, if not, here is one that I've used.

Congrats, always nice to pull the engine and clean it up. Unfortunetly for me I'm currently working on a block that's rusted, needs to go get bead blasted, hot tanked, and painted.
