Aftermarket coolant temperature sender location?
I'm in the process of adding Autometer coolant and oil temperature gauges to my 951. I'm going to use an oil drain plug from Brad-Cam for the oil temp sensor mount.
- Does anyone have any suggestions for mounting the coolant temperature sensor?
- I'm taking the head to the machine shop tomorrow to get it rebuilt, so it would be easy for me to have them tap a hole for me if there's a good location in the head?
Thanks,
Greg

There is room to tap an 1/8"pipe thread hole below the air bleed bolt. Place the hole carefully to leave clearance to get a socket on the air bleed bolt.
I looled at a few option, and this looked the easiest. Has the added advantage that you can run the sensor wire with the main sensor harness under the intake.

Forgive me guys, the head is off of my car and I'm having trouble visualizing where to tap.
Am I tapping into the head or into the water neck itself?
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
You are tapping the top water neck - the thing with the hose clamp in Jamil's pic above.
His is slightly different to mine. I tapped directly below the bleed bolt. If you see where the red line from his sensor runs just below the bleed bolt - that's where my sensor is mounted.

Ok, thanks Tony. I went and dug out the water neck from my ever growing pile 'o parts and now it makes sense. Your description and the picture weren't jiving, now it all makes sense.

Do as Tony suggested and try to leave room to get a socket on the bleed bolt. I just tapped mine in the same location but to be safe, and not deform the mating surface of the water neck, I tapped a little higher. Can't get a socket on the bleed bolt anymore, but shouldn't be a big problem as I normally use an open-ended wrench for cracking the bleed bolt.
