Default First Post! 951 n00b

I know you all cringe at the sight of "n00b" but it's ok, I have plenty of turbo experience (previous cars: 91 Eclips GSX, 93 RX7 TT).

I am looking at an 88 951 with 77k miles perfectly maintained with this list of mods...

Boost Enhancer (Lindsey Racing)
Centerforce Clutch at 73,730 miles
Air Mass Flow Sensor
Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
Oil Pressure Sensor
Stage II Chips (Auto-Authority)
K&N cone filter
Stainless Steel Exhaust System (Powerhaus)
Koni Shocks

That's what he listed in the ad. I checked the car out and I don't think the Lindsey Racing boost enhancer is on it. It's a pretty obvious thing when you look under the hood, from what I can tell.

Otherwise the car checks out nicely. He said it's at 325hp and 338tq. at the flywheel.

Where can I go with this...bigger turbo, injectors, and fuel management and up the boost?

I'm not dropping too much money into mods, but I don't want to be stuck with JUST what it has now.

Any and ALL help is much appreciated!

and now to continue using the search button...ALOT.

Thats a great list of things to start with. If you don't plan on spending the well worth it $3000+ for a Vitesse Stage 2/3, then just replace the current chips with Vitesse. With those plus your mods your car should be around 280-300rwhp. After that it's either find a bigger turbo and try to make everything work, or get a Stage 2/3 kit and have it work right the first time.

But first get a real VDO boost gauge, a wideband air/fuel, and a good set of chips before you start playing with boost! That car should pull away from 90% of what you'll see on the road after that.

I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to get that vitesse stg. II/III since I already had a bunch of mods. I guess all I would replace would be the Autoauthority MAF kit that is in there with the vitesse one.

With the vitesse kit would I have to be doing tuning with the piggyback, or is it pre-programmed software?

I definitely know about getting the boost and A/F gauges...RX7 TT's dont even come with them stock!

stage II/III will make more then 280/300 rwhp... you can do that on a k26. I should be like 250-260 once tuned. he probably IS making 20 or 30 HP short of 280RWHP. vitesse kits yeild much greater then 20 rwhp.
I'd expect about 350 RWHP on vitesse stuff, not sure what boost is necassry for that.

Eyal- Right, I was saying 280-300rwhp is what he could make on his stock turbo.

If he really needs more, then Vitesse Stage 2/3 will give 350+.

Oh yes, the Tial is definately a must!

To many numbers are being thrown around hear. With those mods I can't see more than 260whp. If it's an S it will make around 280whp. Make sure the motor is in good shape. Compression and leak down. I suggest you have it checked out by a professional who knows the 944t in your area. Things can become costly very quick on these cars. The 944t is and excellent car that does everything very good. I'm sure you will enjoy it if you find the right specimen. Welcome and good luck.

So pretty much turn up the boost to get that HP out of my stock turbo with the mods that are on there?

The first thing I would buy would be Boost Guage, A/F Guage, and EGT gauge in a center console mount.

Then some Turbo Replica wheels 18x8.5 up front and 18x10 out back.

Then some eibach springs because it has Koni shocks already.

I am going to get it checked out this Tuesday, we'll see how it goes!

DO NOT RUN MORE THAN 15psi ON APE CHIPS!!!!

Now that we have that out of the way. It is a good list of mods. A must is a boost gauge and TiAL wastegate.

Do not look for more than 260rwhp with the APE MAF and chips with the K26/6 turbo. The 951S can approach 300 with good tuning but don't try it with the chips that are in the car now.

I don't think John at Vitesse will claim his chips will get to 300rwhp on pump gas and a stock turbo.

Definately don't run more than 15psi on APE chips! APE's already run rich in the higher rpms. Chips are mapped for a certain boost level. APE's are aroung 14/15psi. Vitesse chips are around 15 as well, but with additional maps up to 17psi if you have tuned the air/fuel ratio to match that!!! Do not go past 15psi without a wideband unit or you'll join the blown headgasket crowd.

I think he has a 88 951S, so he would have the k26/8, right?

A 951S with 3'' exhaust, the right 15-17psi chips, Tial wastegate, and a MAF should make that power, maxing out the efficiency of the stock turbo. And thats only on a good engine with no vac leaks, good compression and leakdown, etc. Remember how Porshh951 aka Big John took his K26/6 to 300rwhp? Granted that was after extensive tuning, but it can be done. Having the 951S turbo only makes it easier.

Don't run more than 15 psi on APE chips - just in case you are still thinking about it.

I just caught where the owner claims 325 at the crank. Wit ha 15% driveline loss, that puts you at 275 to the wheels. I would expect that from a K27/8.

So is this an S spec car?

I'm pretty sure it isn't an S...but I'll let you guys decide since I' not versed in the ways of body details to tell the two apart...

There aren't any body details to tell the S from the stock

try this...

Identifying the Turbo S
The Turbo S is best distinguished by the engine numbers (the M44/52 engine). The engine serial numbers for the Turbo S are:
47J00001 - 47J01830

Thus, there were 1830 of the 250 hp engines made in 1988.
