Lightbulb US 944 Turbo's with no factory sunroof

Hi all,

I've have an 86 944 Turbo with factory non-sunroof. I was just curious if anyone knew or knows where to find out how many US turbo's were made with no sunroof. I have seen some NA non-sunroofs, but no US turbos. I assume the original owner had the track in mind when he ordered my car as it was prepped very track friendly (ie; non-sunroof, LSD, trans cooler, sport seats, fuchs, emblem delete (why?), ect) Any info is appreciated. Thanks
Joe

Why? It's not one bit stiffer, and whatever weight the sunroof adds is in the mechanism, which is removable if you're really obsessive.

Sunroof cars are rumored to be stiffer due to the extra bracing around the roof. It's rare, and that has it's own appeal, and seems more purposeful, but I would prefer cloth sport seats, I think that's quite rare, and serves a more important function.

One of the guys at the shop I go to has one. Slate gray on burgundy, no sunrood, IIRC it has factory LSD. He just put in GT3 seats as well.

One of those seats is mine damnit I joked a while back that ive ordered so many parts, at least one of his paycheques has to be from me.

hey guys, thanks for the replies so far. One of the main benefits I've enjoyed besides less weight up top and cleaner lines, is that there's at least another inch or two of headroom. This is really important when you're on the track with a helmet. Also, as to the stiffness, although I can tell no seat of the pants difference, the non sunroof is interesting as it's quite obvious that it's just the metal top, some foam, and then headliner. I can actually press on the roof and push in a little whereas the other sunroof cars I have, 83 NA, and 89 NA, or solid as a rock. Just some info for those that care. I had always wanted a non sunroof turbo and it took a long time to find, but I find it to be more unique and special to me. I've never been a sunroof fan and I knew they existed, but I guess they are more rare than I thought. Anyone have any guesses as to how many US turbos came in like this? Seems to be in the hundreds, not thousands range, maybe less?

Thanks

Joe

I have been wondering this also, I know for sure though that it was a rare option.

there are a few guys on here without sunroofs, including me.

I have been trying to figure out the actual numbers in the us for a while now.
I know it's very low though.

I didn't know the cloth sport seats were worth extra, I had a driver side in sport and passenger in standard. both cloth. in perfect condition I sold them both for $600. damn.

I could give a crap about the weight, it's the headroom I could use!

On that note docwyte, how are the new recaros for headroom? I eventually want to get the same seats as you have (even moreso after seeing them installed in your pic thread). I'm not hurting for headroom currently but as I'm tall I don't want to be hurting for it by upgrading my seats. I've heard many people who swap seats (on many different cars not just ours) losing headroom in the process and obviously that's not good.

I just wish there was a Recaro dealer here in the Phoenix area so I could make sure my butt fits comfortably in that particular seat instead of paying $1300 sight unseen for a pair of seats that might be uncomfortable to me. For us being the 5th largest metro area in the US, we sure have a lot of stuff we're lacking for sometimes. There's more than a few Sparco dealers and others, but nothing for Recaro.

I'm curious about the actual amount of headroom difference in a non-sunroof car verses a sunroof car. It probably is not as much as you think.

In a 911, or 928, where the roof retracts, it is a big difference. Because the roof has to retract in between the headliner and upper part.

But in the 944, where the roof pops out.......................it can't be much. Has anyone actually measured???

Well, you gain at least 0.75" up in the front part of the sunroof, cause that part bulged down if you don't have a sunroof. That's exactly where I need it as I'm 6' tall, but have relatively short legs.

The I didn't lose any headroom with the recaros, but I didn't gain all that much. I was hoping to gain .5", but I don't think it happened. I'm 190lbs, 34 inch waist and the recaros are a snug fit. Hardly anyone keeps these in stock, I think even if you went to a recaro dealer you might not be able to sit in them...
