Is it an oil burning smell ? if so check the bottom mount o-ring.

Did you wrap or coat the turbo ? if so it will smoke for a while.

The poor running, I would look for a massive vacuum leak

no coat or wrap, poor running is the tune on the car

Make sure the Idle control valve hose and the Crankcase vent hose are not mixed up.
