I would say a factory 944 turbo that has been around the world for endurance testing probably takes the cake for most important 951 ever.

(that is considering the fact that there aren't any factory 951's that have won LeMans or such an event..)

Yeah, I forgot to take that car into account. Thanks for reminding me Rich.

Also, on the "interesting 951's" note, Tiff Needel's old 951 racecar was up for sale recently in England, for you 5th Gear fans.

No matter what the owner's opinion of the price is, it's only worth what a buyer will pay for it at any given time. He can research, get opinions and come up with an $18k price-but that doesn't mean that a buyer will pay that. It's an assumed value.

He's put a lot of time into researching the car, and I'm insanely jealous that he owns it. I would love to own it, but I can't see that much value in it. If my memory serves, he paid $4000 ish for the car. Drivetrain was out of it, and sitting in a shed. I think it was a running drivetrain, but not installed-and sitting for a number of years.

So, it's a rare car-with an awesome history, re-tubbed in 1990, that needs a TOTAL restoration. No original rollcage, no cup hood, etc. Look at it another way-what is the car worth fully restored? $30k? $40K? Don't forget that it was re-tubbed after Holberts death, so only the VIN and components are significant. Drop $20k-$30k into a proper restoration (to find the un-obtainium parts, magneseum, rebuild the drivetrain, re-powdercoat every inch of the suspension, re-do the body)-the remainder is what it's worth now.

Still wish I could own it, but my number right now would be under $10k. Believe me, I'm no expert. Maybe restored it would do well at Barrett-Jackson-but maybe not.

IIRC the 86 turbo cup cars did NOT have the fibreglass hood anyways.

Even if it were 100% restored, it would be worth what $35-45k? If so what is a 100% restored 951 without history worth, $15k?

So based on those figures:
low / high
Standard 951 at 100% =$15,000 / $20,000
Stardard 951 parts car = $1,500 / $2,000

Holbert 951 at 100% =$30,000 / $40,000
Holbert 951 parts car = $3,000 / $4,000

He paid what it was worth.

I'm sure you are right Tifo-I'm no expert. I still think the car is lacking a LOT of the components that carry the value of Holbert's car.

We agree!

Besides the matter cage, factory race seat, etc, I wonder if the "re-tub" has the factory bracing on the front rail areas and the welded-in-at-the-factory cup strut tie bar mounts?

Actually, I read it in that excellence article that was printed last year. But if it makes you feel better, I do pay attention to what you write, usually.

Not only that, but if the car was re-tubbed in 1990, that was 2 years or so after Holbert died. It's a totally different car now. For me, that is a negative point. If the car was original, or was rebuilt and Holbert raced it afterwards, things would be different. Maybe I am alone on this one, but that's just the way I feel.

Fair and balanced discussion of this car. It has some very interesting bits, but it's geneology has taken some unfortunate turns and it is far from complete or original now.

I have no interest in flaming a sincere and honest, if eager, seller, but any complete Turbo Cup original race car would be of much, much more value than this car. Show me that Joahkim Winklehock won the first Turbo Cup series in this car and I'm on the way to the credit union. Post a picture of Freddy Baker's delivery sheet on the Nelsons "loophole" car and I'm and headed to your address with a full tank of gas, a pack of Lucky Strikes and a backup pair of Rayban Wayfarers

We've all gotten a good look at this offer and the lack of interest is deafening. It is worth the retail of it's parts, unfortunately.

On a related topic, how would you guys value my car? First produced turbo Cup car and in pretty good condition. Reason why I ask is that turbo Cup #2 does not exist and a buddy here in town who owns car #3 has gotten inquiries about buying mine and his car by a collector who wants to own the two earliest Cup cars.

Not sure if I want to sell, but I have been thinking about it.
