Anyone know if a source/part number for these little buggers? Had to cut a few of them takign the engine out, and want to replace with the same 'stick though the sheetmetal anchored ties. Can't seem to find them in Pet.

Won't a standard zip tie work?

The part I'm after is a combo zip tie with a mounting base that locates in the engine bay sheetmetal. Could probably fabricate some trick base for a standard zip tie, but that would take more work than its worth if the factory part is available.

I went to Parts Heaven in Hayward, and pulled them off a junker. With a little Armor All, they look new.

FYI, unlike a regular tie-wrap, you can undo these. There is a little hinge-like thing that allows the strap to pull out. No need to cut them! (At least for the ones that run along the top of the firewall.)

Edit: Check out illustration 902-37 in Pet. The picture is poor, but it looks like item 9 represents a series of "cable binders for bolts" in various sizes, each with its own part number.

I bought about 30 of them last year from a local shop (who ordered them) and they were just under a buck each. Every time I have the 944/51 guys over they dissapear from my toolbox.

I have a few left over from my negative cable install. Let me know how many you need and I'll see if I have enough (minus what I want to keep in inventory). I got some extras when I ordered my negative cable kit from Iceshark.

These are the ties that thread onto a stud welded to the engine bay sheetmetal, right?

OK I think I know the ones you're talking about - these are the ones with the little "cup" on them that plugs onto the threaded bolt end, right?

There are also some (at top of firewall on early cars) that are standard zip ties; they thread through a "slot" in a plastic cap that goes on the threaded bolt ends there. Thought that's what you were talking about.

There are a lot more than 7 of them if you search around the engine bay on the later cars.

If people want more I could order extras if I do the new build of positive battery cables. Prices vary all over the map from 30 cents to over $4, each. I should be able to get more for a buck each with the shipping and such. But try the local Porsche dealer first as some have old price lists and only charge around 50 cents, if they have them in stock. When I put in orders they end up being shipped in from Germany.

I've found suitable replacements at Home Depot -- not exact fit, but functional.

You mean a standard cable tie with a screw hole in it? Those don't come with a hole size that will grab the stud tight. And the stud has this crazy sized coarse thread pitch that normal nuts won't match up with. You could use a plastic/nylon nut that would deform over the threads and wind up with something that will work.

But, that is a lot of monkeying around. If you can find the proper German tie for a buck or so, may as well use them. It is not like you need 100 of them.

As far as I know the Germans are the only people that make these unusual ties and I searched high and low for alternatives.

Maybe you could epoxy it onto the threads? I know it sounds ghetto, but think about it - if you ever had to remove it (after the epoxy hardened) you could just "unscrew" it. You could probably screw it back on afterwards too.
