Default How do you know if cylinder walls are bad?

I pulled the head off the engine I am selling and it looks competely fine. It spun a rod bearing but I was under the impression that the cylinder was scorned. I looked and couldnt see any deep scratches. I did see some vertical lines but Nothing I could feel at all with my finger or nail. I have pics if you guys need to see them but if a cylinder is ruined can I feel it with my finger? Thanks

Taper in the cylinders is hard to spot with your finger, to know for sure you can take it to a machine shop and have them take a quick look at it.

If you feel like adding some tools to your toolbox buy a set of outside micrometers and a t-gauge. You can use these tools to accurately measure taper and out-of-round of the cylinders (if you need to know more about this let me know and I will explain further, however I do not want to go into more detail unless you are interested).

Even if you do not feel like going to this extent, I suggest buying a feeler gauge and measuring the depth of the small scores that you see and make sure they are within factory specifications. The general rule however, is that if you can not feel them with your fingernail then they are probably not a problem to worry about.

Ill post some pics but I dont think you can really tell. I could NOT feel ANYTHING with my fingers . Not one thing. I can feel the top ridge on the cylinder but it isnt bad at all. I just need to resize the pics and theyll be up.

Here is what I found https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turbo-and-turbo-s-forum/144102-blown-hg-cylinder-wall-scoring.html. Put everything back together and the car runs super strong. I suspect your scratch is about what mine was. In my case it was a broken heater valve that caused my brother to overheat......

The second picture kinda scares me. Is that scoring or just debris?

Best looking ones I've seen around here for a while. Some have reused with worse scores than you show.

Good luck with those Sanp gauges and Outside Mic. If you have ever used these tools before, you know what I mean.

Well the black "score" is just grease like Eric pointed out. What scores do you mean? The lines you see? Because they are just discolored lines without anything else. I couldnt feel anything over them. Do you think this block is fine? Could it be scored under the pistons that I cant see at BDC?

If that is the case I would say you are straight. Did you see my pictures? Use WD-40 and clean out the bores. Use a good shop vacuume to suck out as much of the debris (like the caca at the right of the pic in the bore) as you can and go ahead and turn it over to check for any other damage. Don;t use compressed air because it can just push stuff down between the ring and the bore. The WD-40 will lubricate it enough for that slow of movement.

The (part of) the cylinders you show look good, but the pistons look like they have been in contact with the (exhaust) valves. Is that an old injury?
