Rothmans Turbo Cup in Excellence
Did anyone notice the Canadian Turbo Cup's were running full 4" exhausts!! With stock K26/8's. And I thought my 3" was huge . Has anyone on the list ever used a 4" monster exhaust?
Mark |
Issue?
What exact issue?
|
December 2004
|
Ah. I only have Nov 2004. I will buy it tomorrow. I am VERY curious.
Thanks, Rob :) |
Does that include the Downpipe? I cant imagine how it would fit...
Evil944T has a 4 inch exhaust, with a 3 inch downpipe, from what I've read. |
My Excellence showed up yesterday and the article was done at Summit Point where I instruct for Bill Scott Racing great article! The exhaust is a walker exhaust and it eliminates the cat. :jumper:
|
I have a 3" down to firewall and a 4" to the rear with a 12" x 4"in/out borla xr-1....loud but, sounds good
|
Hey Mark, quick thread hijack - Got your message, Im in Evansville this weekend. Good news is my car is back on the ground. We should get together this week/next weekend. Ill be around!

Awesome! Thanks. I got the free trial issue with the Rothmans Turbo Cup in there... wow. I'm really liking that opened up exhaust. How is the spool time on that thing? If you have any video or audio clips... I'd love to see them!:)
 |

...if I can get away from next summer with dyno time for custom chips and one DE, I'll be a very happy man! |
I dont think that a full 4inch could fit. At least up near the turbo...3inch is hard to squeeze.
|
Can't wait to see the issue...our track car has 3" to the transaxle, then 4" out the back with no muffler. Wastegate dumps to atmospher, Chris Cervelli built this system, it came off the race car that we parted.

Almost no turbo lag, it pulls hard from 3000rpm up. EDIT: You don't happen to have any clips of the beast in action, do you? |
Hey Pete, two questions...
1) Summit Point. Where do you live? What shop do you go to? I hope you frequent the track, as I'd love to meet you sometime, talk shop, and see the car in it's natural environment :) 2) It said you hit 145 right before turn one... at 6200rpm in 5th. Was your car regeared? In a standard 951 tranny, 6200rpm is almost 20mph higher. |

Where can i buy the Excellence issue with the Rothmans Cup from France ?
Is there a website to place an international order ?? Thanks ;) |

But according to several "good" sources, it should be approximatively the following numbers. If not exact, it may be pretty close from the truth i think... * 1986 (Turbo Cup 220 bhp) RoW 43 (chassis numbers not specifics) * 1987 RoW 88 Canada 11 * 1988 RoW 35 Canada 38 * 1989 RoW 25 (chassis numbers not specifics) |

I need a sound clip of a 4" exhaust!!! If anyone could post one I would greatly appreciate it.
|
I'm with chris, I'm dying to hear this. I'd also love to see a video. In-car with boost gauge, out of car on the track, whatever. I just want to see it in action :)
Seb, what exhaust do you have your car? |
Are all the Rothmans cars Canadian, or did they run that series in the US too? Did they sell Rothmans ciggies in the U.S.?
|
someone please post video clips in this thread. I am a video freak.....I need to see and hear this.
|
Peckster
The series was only in Canada in North America. I believe there was one in South Africa and I believe one in Germany ? I guess there was one in France ? regards Ed PS I had bought a # of parts from Canada when the series ended |
Just to let y'all know, and this is sort of letting the cat out of the bag a bit early... I may have a source for a 4" stainless steel oval exhaust system, from the downpipe back for 951's. It ain't gonna be cheap, but it will be nice. Don't bother pm'ing me yet, its still early. When I am ready to share info on this, I will it post here.
After reading that article, I am darned glad I picked up that Turbo Cup hood I have when I did... Has anyone heard from Sean, the guy that picked up Al Holberts 951 Turbo Cup car lately? Regards, |
Scott Your a
Lucky dog .... :) Ed By the time a I got my parts the pickings were slim :( |
944 Turbo Cup trophy :
Germany : 1986 (220 hp) and 1987 to 1989 (250 hp) France : 1987 to 1989 (250 hp) and 1990 (300 hp) South Africa : 1988 / 1989 ? (hard to know) Canada : 1988 to 1990 (1986 and 1987 were the 944 Rothmans NA series) My genuine exhaust is fully free but certainly not in 4" diameter. It has the standard diameter (2,5") and it was the case for all french cup cars. In Germany, they got the catalytic converter for the race, and a rear muffler i believe... It was the first race car to run with it and was a big test for the catalytic converter ;) For the Canadian cup i already heard about a Walker 3" exhaust for the race... ?!? If anyone has some Canadian Turbo Cup series videos (and also South Africa videos) i would be interested in a trade with some French / German videos ;)
I have the 1987 german season, and some french seasons. Can someone give me the email address of Walker Exhaust and/or the postal address ? There is nothing on their website... |
i SECOND THAT
I would be very interested as well regards Ed |

Seb got a full version of the article :)
|
Seb,
Have you got the 1987 German season in digital format or just VHS? Btw, I've got a book about the French turbo Cup series. Black with lots of nice pictures and text in French (which I can't read). The P.O. of my car found on a flee market in Paris a few years ago. |

Can you post the title, author and ISBN number? Thanks! Karl. |
The title is "TURBO CUP" and it seems to have been released by Porsche AG and Shell Lubricants, does not have an ISBN number.

Thanks Anders...
I'm guessing it's this one: http://www.editions-palmier.fr/Libra...turbo-cup.jpeg Karl. |
Yep, that's the one.

Hi all,
I got a full version of the article, thanks ;) Regarding the videos, i have it on a VHS format but i can put it on a DVD to send... turbocup and sweanders : send me a mail to webmaster@<nospam>asarus.com and we will arrange a trade, no pb ;-) Regarding the Turbo Cup book, i also have it. It's no longer available. It speaks about the first 3 seasons of the French Turbo Cup series (1987 to 1989). You can see my car, it was driven by JM.AMOROS before. This book was produced by Sonauto (the French Porsche importer) and given to the competitors, sponsors, etc... |

Hey Seb, I'd like to get in on that action. Thanks!
|
Seb, e-mail sent!
|
Seb, there might be a help-Rennlisters/get-paid-to-make-DVDs proposition here. Tif and I are willing to get in on this it seems.
|
Here is a small gift for all the rennlisters and 951 addicts ;)
The 1988 french Turbo Cup serie : 34 Mb video - real video low resolution format (250 bhp cup cars) I hope you'll like ;) |
KILLER!!!
|
I just downloaded it and couldn't get it to play. Any tips? Thanks! Windows Media Player crapped out and said "no way". :(

THanks Seb, that's great... for some reason though, the audio has a highpitch sound in it and it jumps in and out. Anyone else having this problem or is it just me retarded computer?
|
fsareracer03 - its your retarded computer
Keep these videos coming, please!! |
Got it working. Thanks!

Who was that bought the DVD and was 'sharing' it? I deleted that e-mail and would like a copy.....
|
That DVD was the Rothmans 944 Canadian series (not 951) from 1986. I have a copy, but no burner. Sorry!
|
I would just about kill for some of that video, but no way I'm going to risk installing RealPlayer. I'm in the process of rebuilding my teenage son's PC after it was ravaged by malware despite a firewall. Getting real careful about what comes into this network these days.
Anyone have any of this stuff in video file form [non-streaming]? The 944Cup series would surely appreciate having some of that footage. Thanx! |
Downloading Real Alternative here does not require providing your e-mail adress, unlike when downloading Real Player on the Real Player website.
|
Thanx Thom - got it.
And MANY THANX Seb for the great footage! THis was a seious series! Now, we need to find some way to get the Canadian series video hosted somewhere. At least we will be able to follow the commentary. |
I wonder if we could convince NASA so sanction a unique 944-SPEC class - Full Contact 944SPEC?
|
Matt,
NASA sanctions the 944Cup and 944SuperCup here on the east coast. In the Mid Atlantic region, we are the largest single series group running with NASA. Given the success of the series here, I'm sure that the NASA leadsership in this area would be helpful in convincing NASA west coast to support branch of the series there. There is also a 944Cup series running in the South, based in Florida. PM if you want some contact info. It just takes someone to step up and run with the idea! The 2004 season had more contact that we would like. The 2005 season will see more enforcement of the modified 13/13 to act as a deterrent to overly aggressive racing. That said, the NASA rules are somewhat different to the strict PCA 13/13 situation. For example, there is no way that a racer who sustains damage after hitting oil dropped by another car would be hit with a 13/13 under NASA rules. This is not a criticism of PCA 13/13 rules, just trying to point out that the NASA rule is different. In the last race of the season last weekend, I blew a hose during qualifying going into the chute at Summit Point. Starting an on-board skid pad generator at 100MPH-plus is never good. Managed to save a total catastrophe, but did contact the tire wall and bent one panel in the process. No fault, no foul. |
There is a Nasa sticker on my car, did they sponsor the German turbo Cup as well? The pic is kinda bad but it's next to the "T" in "Blaupunkt"
http://caesar.99kr.com/~ixbauto/Pors...0-image2_1.jpg |
Anders, thats a different Nasa for sure!
|
Anders, I noticed your hood doesn't have the reliefs in the front corners for the hood pins. Is yours a fiberglass or steel hood?

Great Cup Video
Asarus;
Thanks for sharing the great racing footage. It was a blast to watch! Does anyone have these races on DVD? Also, any video from the 93-94 IMSA Fire Hawk series? I have a 93 968 Fire Hawk prepped car and would love to find some footage of the racing action. Thanks! Joe |

Did you come across some documentation saying yours was the prototype cup car or something? On the same note... did they use the option code tags on the cup cars? Was there a cup option code? Thanks for the info guys, Kevin |
I don't have a a cup car but I do have the wheels and they are
white phone dials 8's in the front 9's in the rear And pretty lightweight like 18 lbs ? regards Ed |
Kevin,
in 1986 the Cup's first year , the cars had Fuchs, steel lid, 220HP, different cage. Anders' car seems corect all the way. |

Thanks for the info guys, Kevin Mine is different from stock 1986 configuration in four ways, it's upgraded to 1987 spec turbo (K26/8) and has the 305 hp French Cup chips and a modified wastegate. The catalyst converter is removed and I've added a muffler (3" free flowing) I also have different camber plates up front to be able to dial in more camber (I think it's around 3,5 degrees negative now) and H&R progressive springs all around. It's tucked away for winter now http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/tu...for_winter.jpg That is a 928 car cover btw, fits very nicely over 944's as well. |
What were the differences of the '86 cup cars to the standard '86 Turbos other than exhaust than? Sounds like the later cup cars were a more different then their street counterparts. Interesting.
Lorelei is down for the count for the winter as well. It's going to be hard to go a while w/o her! *sniffle* |

That is interesting... a lot of the upgrades were 951S predecessors (standard LSD, brakes, sway bars).

I just got around to reading this article (my mag arrived on Friday  ) and just wanted to add an anecdote about this car, which I remember from the 1989 season.
The article says it was the 7-Up guest car in 1989. I was working for Jim Russell Racing Drivers School at Mt. Tremblant during that summer and recall one race weekend during which Scott Goodyear was the driver of that car. During qualifying the car caught fire and had to be brought back to the paddock by flat-bed and didn't get out anymore that day. Despite that, he had put in a fast enough time to get near the front of the grid (looks like 4th). The next day the car was back running, although a little charred I think all down the passenger side. I seem to recall the 7-Up sticker being blackened and bubbled (I guess they didn't have another to put on). It looks like from the above link that he finnished in 7th, the races were all quite close and very exciting to watch. Another guest driver in that car was Davy Jones who was driving for Jaguar in IMSA that year, IIRC. He was one of the biggest celebs that I can recall, although there were several drivers racing there that year (not necessarily in the Porsche TC) who went on to distinguish themselves. One notable was Jimmy Vasser who was driving in the Export A F2000 series. He was very fast but had trouble beating eventual series champ Claude Bourbonnais. Bourbonnais, unfortunately never got his career squared away. He eventually tried a couple of races in F3000 in Europe but his money ran out before he had anything to show for it (except for a podium finish at Donnington). Another example of having to be in the right place at the right time for fame in motor racing. It never happened for CB (although he's a multiple champion in F2000, routinely beat Jacques Villeneuve (the son) in Formula Atlantic and has driven almost everywhere from Indy to Le Mans) but deffinitely did for Vasser (who in 1989 was sponsored by LucasFilms). Different story for the 1988 driver of this car, Stephane Proulx. He was a fantastic and very dedicated young Canadian driver who was on his way up the ladder possibly to a drive in F1 but his life was unfortunately cut short. :( I seem to remember him having the reputation of being a pain in the a$$ at the time but that was probably because he was so determined. He was picked up by Players quite early on in his career and as quite well backed. One thing maybe someone can clear up (if anyone has read this far ;) ): the guest driver of this car for the first race of the year in 1989 at Mosport is noted as Jacques Villeneuve. Is this, as we used to say in Canada, Jacques the son or Jacques the brother? Jacques the brother (of Gilles) had a great carreer in Canadian racing and was most likely more availble at that time than the son was (he should have been racing in Italy, then) but I don't know for sure. Anyone know? Anyway, a little Monday diversion. Back to work! :P |
That's great, Pete. Thanks for lending your car for the article, it's great to see these cars enjoyed as they should be. Thanks also for letting me reminisce ;) You've got some fantastic history with that car, congrats.
The page that I linked to says there was a Mercedes Stermitz from Austria who drove the car at Mosport. It also names Jim Kenzie as one of the drivers, who's a journalist from Toronto. Hopefully he didn't hurt it too badly :p Any sign of charring on the bottom? I think the fire was mostly superficial but I don't recall the source. I'm sure it's been repainted several times since, but you never know. It looks like the car was entered by Downtown Fine Cars who ran quite a number of the cars (7?) so it makes sense that they would have to identify which head went with which car. Or possibly it was the company who was rebuilding the engines, I think the article mentions that there was one group (VW?) did all of the rebuilding. I wish I had some pics to pass on but for some reason I didn't have a camera with me that summer. Stupid :P |
Bump for an unanswered question... do Cup cars have option stickers on them? If so, what's the Cup option code?

Man, these cars just friggin ROCK! All day long and NINE TIMES on Sunday. Y'alls talk about putting your cars up for the Winter is beyond me. My brother-in-law (in Chicago) just put his muscle car up for the year, and he was bummin about it, too. Down here in Texas (and other warmer climes) we just DRIVE ours all year long...
