Default a/c diagnosis please

Ok, its hot here in NC this week so I went down to Jiffy Lube to have them test the a/c. It is an R-134 conversion that blew quite cold last summer but it quite warm now. They hooked it up and ran 15 mins of vacumn with no pressure loss. There was no freon in the system when it was vacumned. They then put in 1.88 lbs (that was all it would take) and ran it. It blew cold and maintained good high side pressure but the low side dropped steadily to 28psi where it seemed to hold. The technician said it must have a leak (nothing visible on the compressor or the connections we could see) and pumped the freon back out of it since he didn't think it would hold for long. He felt the leak was large since the pressure dropped so steadily and to such a low level. He got 2.11 lbs out of it though after running it for 20 mins. Does it sound like a correct diagnosis?

Thanks

Mine has been pretty warm during the mid of the day also. In the morning, nice and cold, lunchtime, cooler opening the windows. Will try to see if it will take a charge.

Do any of those "freon boosters" help ??

2.11 pounds is too much for R134 so you were over-charged with refrigerant at that point. 28psi low side should give vent temps around the 45F range.

Edit: Here's a temperature chart compliments of ackits that's a general guide:

I bought a kit from Interdynamics(www.id-usa.com) that I read about in June 04 Popular Mechanics (great stuff pg. 139). Great results, but we'll see how long it lasts.

Do people agree though that 28 psi on the low side with the rapid drop from 40 or 50 indicates a leak or could something else be wrong. I guess it has to be leaking since it was fairly cold last summer and there was very little freon in it yesterday. I guess my main question is should I just charge it up and see how long it lasts or should I expect a rapid leak given the numbers.

Well, if it hadn't been used in almost year, maybe not.
