Rear Toe Setting Problem
 

Hi all, alignment problem here on my '86 951.

Had a suspension upgrade completed and the alignment went well until the rear toe setting part on the Drivers Rear.

My mechnic used the special eccentric adjuster tool to set both sides, and the drivers rear was not moving enough to get to the slight Toe-In setting I wanted. Its set with a slight toe-out right now.

He told me that the swing arm (not sure of actual name of these parts, spring plate?) was adjusting to some degree, but stopped at one point and they just could not budge it further. He insisted that the necessary bolts were loosened to allow adjustment (he did get the passenger side correct) and that there appeared to be another 1/8th to 1/4 inch left to bring it to the setting I wanted, but couldn't get it there.

Any comments ideas on what could be hampering this? Prior owner suspension or body damage, etc? Do the specific suspension components involved here"freeze" up? Anyone have a pic or description of the way this eccentric adjusted works and what could be limiting the movement?

A few possibilities;
1. Bent trailing arm. Hard to tell if bent by visual inspection, but cheap enough to replace (labor may be expensive, but the part is not)
2. Bent frame. A body shop can check this for you on a chassis alignment machine.
3. Severely worn spring plate bushings. Unlikely, but possible.

If none of those pan out, you can grind the spring plate toe slots to get more adjustment.
