Default Need Advice for New Tires 18 inch Wheels

would appreciate advice on tire purchase, presently have 18 in stock boxster wheels and P0 tires. The tires need replaced , I have heard Kumos were much lesss expensive with good wear and handling. I would appreciate responce from those who have 18 inch wheels and the tires they recommend. I drive the car daily in the summer and fall.

Best Wishes

I think the Khumo 712's are an adequate tire in 18". They are by far the best priced. So, unless you want to spend over 1g go with the Khumos.

I have a set of the ecsta MX's (275 18 rear, 245 18 front) and I chose them based on cost. I believe the SO3's are the better all around choice but I'm not sure they're $400 better. Dry grip on the MX's is awesome, turn-in is slightly better on the so3's, treadwear seems to be even. I don't know how they do in the wet as it never rains here.

Let me quote myself...

1) If the words good tire and Kumho are in the same sentence, there is a problem.

2) If the words cheap tire and Kumho are in the same sentence I have no problem with that.

3) Using a Kumho on a Porsche is like wearing a Folex with an Armani suit.

I think you get the picture. Their product is cheap, not good, there is a difference. You might also try the Yokohama ES100 if price is an issue, if not look to the BS S-03 or the Michelin Pilot Sport.

You have to look at the savings vs. the life of the tires. For a few cents a day more isn't it worth having a good set of tires on the car? The tires have more impact in how your car handles then any other factor you will change.

I am running Goodyear GD-D3 as a street tire, and Pilot Sport Cup's for the track. I highly reccomend both for their respective uses.

I have never been terribly happy with Kumho's.

I've had the 712's and also the Ecsta V-700's...I think I've learned my lesson at this point.

For street driving only, the Michelin Pilot Sport is a very nice tire...no complaints with some of the Conti's either.

I'm running Bridgestone S-03 on my 17's and am very pleased with their grip performance on the track and on the street.

Money well spent.

I am runnig the BF Goodrich KD and that has been a gret tire. Car and Driver summed it up best when they said it was the closest thing to an R compound tire for the street.

Take a look at the Bridgestone Potenza RE-750. Very similar to the S-03, longer treadlife, lower price. I'll be buying these later this year.

I absolutely love the Bridgestone Performance tires. The good old RE-71, then the RE-730 and even though I have not tried it, the new RE-750. However, the price of the RE-750 in an 18" wheel is substantially higher than the Khumo. The only tire close to the price of the Khumo is the Yoko ES-100. I have heard good things about this tire, but Yoko lost my business a long time ago with their crappy AVS Intermediate tire. Worst tire ever.

Matt, I would consider Khumo tires to be Good. Not great, and not fantastic, but better than most at a Good price. I also really like their Full Race tires. They are no Hoosiers, but they also don't carry a Hoosier price. I also know plenty of Porsche owners that have Khumo tires.

When I can justify the cost, Bridgestone recieves my money.

Khumo tires size for size from my experience and others I have checked with are one of the heavy weights in the tire business. They are almost 50% more in weight than a Hoosier for example, and more than the S-03's. They are my last choice, personal opinion. My son just went the RE-750 route and it seems to be a solid tire. Not equal to the S-03's but close enough for everyday driving and alot better tire wear and cost. The S-03's wear quite a bit quicker, are a little quiter and hold a little better wet & dry. The big thing was they fit his budget, now and for durability.

Khumo use very poor quality rubber compounds, combined with poor quality chemical engineering for additives. They dont handle heat well. I cant speak for the pattern, but as a general rubber product, you cant get much worse.

I highly recommend the BFG KD based on what I've seen with local street/track cars. Incredible grip yet they last forever!

The BFG KD's are a great tire... the only issue with them is if you are running a lot of negative camber... you need to keep an eye on them as they seem to break down long before the tread wears out. That said, they still last a long time.
