missing bolt on top the throttle body?
Im currently in the middle of a major coolant leak crisis when I noticed a
burt out spot on my engine hood heat shield (bit silver thing on the underside of the hood). it was right above the thottle body, where I noticed a hole. With the engine running, i plugged the hole with my finger, and the engine seemed to smooth out a bit. anyone know what goes here? a screw i imagine, but why would it be missing? thanks for any help? |
Thats the Idle adjustment screw. It allows you to adjust the idle speed. I don't know the size of it, sorry.
|
well, that would explain my abnormally high idle this winter. thx

Yeah, they tend to back themselves out.
Someone just posted a few days back that you can stick gum or something of that sort on top to keep it from backing out. Do a search. |
Also you can use a paint (fingernail polish crap), will hold it better and will also ballpark where it was set at.

Here is the link from the thread I posted. I was informed that you should use the correct screw, o-ring (IIRC) and you may keep it from backing out by using some blue loctite. I still have that gummy tar-like junk on mine for now. |
This may be a hard part to replace.. the dealer won't do it for reasonable $$.. BUT I remember reading a tech article about this and there is a VW part # that is the same. I'm at work now, but I'll search when I get home and post the part #. The same thing happened to me.

That's the idle-adjustment screw:
http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/whistle.jpg Part# 930.110.919.00 and I bought one for about $4.82 from my local dealer. |
Danno is there an o-ring that goes in there with the screw? What is the best way to secure the screw so that it doesn't back out again? Is Loctite good or is there something even more reliable or better for the application?
thanks! |
It actually comes with an O-ring. Problem is the O-ring gets compressed over time and doesn't seal anymore. Then the bolt vibrates free! I'd use very measure possible to secure that thing! Loctite, tape, glue, drill a hole in the side and safety wire in place! I've seen a couple of cars with the hole siliconed over as well.
|
OK - I just tack welded it into place! :D
.....just kidding! |
I had to buy a normal bolt and grind the head to be a little thinner, and I ground a cone shape on the other end, like the stock one. To lock it, I used a nut, which had to be ground too, to be a jam nut.
|
Part number is VW # 035 133 432A (about $14)
|
If you have a one with a new O-ring it will stay in place for about another 18 years. I'm surprised your engine wasn't running really badly with it missing, mine sure was.
|
my mechanic got me one with an o-ring for $2-3
