increasing HP in 1986 951
I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times before but in an ever changing world, I want the latest info.
I have a 1986 951 which I use only on the track. I want to get about 50 more HP out of it. The current turbo needs to be rebuilt/replaced and so this would be the best time to do this.
What I reqire is reliability and the least turbo lag possible.
What should I do?

Race Car
It's pretty important to make sure the whole car can handle 50 more horsepower. This could mean 50 hp more than it currently has, or 50 hp more than it should have if everything in top shape.
It's also important to know which way you want to go. Bigger turbo? Stroker motor and stock (or not a monster at least) turbo? What's already been done to the car? What kind of track stuff, club racing? DE's? You have to be careful not to bump yourself to a new class by doing certain mods.

What does your car have right now? Please post the details it will help us. Aftermarket turbo be good now since yours is bad what about chips? That would give you 50+hp but do you have chips already?

Sorry. The engine/turbo is stock. There has been no "chipping". The suspension is coilover and the brakes are being upgraded as we speak. The car is very well sorted for the track and I have left the engine for last. I don't race so class is unimportant, I only do DE. I would like to go the route that would give me reliable HP with the least lag.

I thought Vitesse kits were for much more than a 50HP improvement? I would say he just get his turbo rebuilt (300$)and get some chips (150-300 depending on vendor)if he really just wants 50 hp. Much cheaper. Or upgrade it to a k27/6 and get chips.
mitch236, are you going to replace the turbo yourself?
And are you really going to be happy with 50hp, or do you want to have the ability to upgrade later for more power if you decide. There are a ton of options out there for you just ask around.

By the way I went from a stock turbo S k26/8 turbo to a k26/6 and I am very happy with the lower RPM boost. Sure I miss the high end power, but for around town driving its much more suitable.
Now another way that worked for me to boost sooner is a test pipe. I have to think my cat was toasted because my car really woke up after the test pipe, but either way i dont think it could hurt.

If you choose to upgrade the turbo, you most certainly can, however it is very expensive and rather difficult job.
However if the turbo is functioning well enough to continue using it for a while, I would save money and time and start by Chipping the car.
Autothority stage 2 chips claim 47 hp over stock. (this is pretty much a must for any car)
Next you can start playing with adjustable boost. Lindsey make a nice bolt up dual port wastegate and adjustable boost ****. Add a pound or two over the stock setting and that should net you another 20 or so HP. FYI- It's a good idea to use an aftermarket boost gauge since the stock is not very accurate. This is a safe mod as long as you dont over boost the car. I wouldnt reccomend going over 16lbs boost without using at least a mxture of 50/50 race gas and pump 92; in fact you should be safe up to 18 with no worries about the head gasket. I've gone as high as 20lbs with this set up with no problems at all. That's with a stock head gasket too.

Very simple, I think.
Good old fashioned MBC bypassing the CV will hold more boost and reduce lag substantially.
Set of chips (probably Guru) will then allow you to run that higher boost. Guru will let you run 18psi.
You should see ~250 at the wheels easily which is more than a 50hp increase.
No need to get fancy with anything else if you're starting from a stock motor setup and only need another 50hp.

Rebuilt k26 6# turbo and chips will get you that 50hp plus you would want to get boost controller. If you want to keep upgrading I would get an aftermarket turbo.
