This $18 shunt meter is nice since it has a large current capacity. Most DVM have a current limit of 10A or less and if you exceed it you blow the fuse in your DVM. The shunts go up to 100 A but it will still measure down to 10mA current draw. Shunts (low value resistors) are very durable and very hard to damage. . Lots of similar devices out there.

One way to setup for testing. Allows you to pulls fuses and troubleshoot without worrying about meter connections.
Get a short battery cable with a battery clamp on one end and a terminal on the other. Connect the terminal to the shunt and the other end to the battery (ground is safer).
Get a battery terminal post adapter and connect a short cable with terminals on both end to the battery terminal post and to the other end of the shunt. Connect the battery terminal post to the cars battery cable and you are good to go.
