Power steering hoses
 

I want to know if there are any places that have reasonable prices for the power steering hoses? The hose going from the cooler to the rack is cracked and needs to be replaced, I want to change them all while I am in there. They are extremely expensive and I hate to spend $500-600 for them.

See if one of the hydraulic suppliers in your area can rebuild your hoses using current fittings with new hose.

Are you talking about the short piece of hose on the metal return line to the cooler? The metal line that parts suppliers want $2-300 for?

I just replaced that with a piece of 3/8" ID hydraulic hose that a hose repair shop gave me ( they scattered like a covey of quail when I said the word "metric", but they gave me some leftover hose from a previous job anyway).

Cut the old hose off at the metal line and replace it. The metal line has a ribbed hose barb brazed on that end and the 3/8" hose pushes up on it for a very tight fit. Add a regular hose clamp on it for insurance.

I did this and it works fine. That line is the fluid return line and is relatively low pressure compared to the pressure line.

After I discovered a bad kink in the metal part of that return line up near the banjo fitting on the rack, I cut the metal line ~3" from the banjo fitting. Then I clamped that same 3/8" hose on the banjo fitting stub and ran hose all the way to the cooler. Much easier to install and route a hose behind the crossmember and PS pump than a rigid metal line. Just zip tie the return hose to the rack similar to how the factory attaches the pressure line there.

That is similar to what I was going to do, but I was worried about them kinking and causing issues. I am especially concerned with the really tight return line getting kinked at the rack. Have you had any issues at all with that?

I have had zero issues with my setup.

I didn't take a picture, but after cutting the metal line near the banjo fitting and installing a long 3/8" hose on it, I oriented the banjo 'pigtail' and hose downward in an approximate 4-5 o'clock orientation and tightened the banjo bolt. This allows the hose to pass down between the other fittings on the PS tower and then down along the top of the crossmember and rack, where I secured the hose with tie-wraps to the rack.

The hose is pretty snug where it passes by the other banjo fittings but after that it is much easier to route to the cooler than is the stock steel line. My car is parked in a garage about 30 miles away so I can't readily get a picture, but I will try to get one when I can get the car back up on my lift.

I will have to dig around for and see. I will post if I find any. Steering racks and engines are out right now.
