Default Play in gearbox??

Im not sure on the exact terms, but is there suppose to be play in the 2 output shafts that the CV joints bolt onto on the gearbox? mine has some play (side to side movement) in it which does worry me.

Play in which direction, and how much (how many millimeters)?

2 to 3mm is normal, BUT each cup should be independent from the other. If you push on the left cup and the right cup moves, you have bad diff bearings.

Looks like the diff bearings could be bad.

Also now when spinning both cups, the gearbox locks up in either direction. If i put it in gear and turn the shaft it all locks up in both directions. i drove it into work so it wasn't broken. im not sure what's going on.
