Default "New" M030 struts with movement betwwen rod and damper

Some time ago my girlfriend bought nwe (ouch!) M030 struts for her 89 951. When routinely checking for loose front bearings, I noticed that I was able to move the wheel in and out, but that the movement was in the strut(s). I thought it was because the car was jacked up and that the piston in the damper was near the top of the cylinder. Last week we had the car in for an alignment, and when the shop tested front suspension for faults it was apparent that the right strut was very loose even at normal heights. The left one was tight. There is no oil leak. I need to add that we have been chasing this problem for a long time, and that the car has a strong tendency to wander on rough roads (It also has 18" wheels with 235 tires up front).

Have anyone experienced this? I guess it is a production fail, I am just sorry I did not realise it when I first experienced the looseness in the damper.

I guess we just need to replace the faulty strut. We still have the old struts, I have seen that it might be possible to have them refurbished?

I have had that exact problem with M030 struts that had just been rebuilt by 'Koni Authorised Service Centre'. I've yet to get it back to them but I'm pretty sure it is wear in the top bushing. Pretty sure it can be resolved without splashing out on a new strut.
