Default Race car hatch latch ideas?

Hi, I'm running out of ideas to correct my problem. I deleted the oem hatch closure system because it was problematic and wanted an external closure. Doesn't have to lock. ANy pics or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

yeah, many of the 944Spec guys out this way use those rubber latches for the hatch.

Would love to see detailed photos of them installed. I used those then upgraded to a heavier duty version of the same thing but find my hatch struts are still to powerful that I am getting too big a gap at the hatch seal:/

Is it for a track car? I like this elegant solution but off course you’ll need a poly hatch.

Ouuuughhh… that is nice!
Mostly street use but is technically a track car. so solutions along these lines are totally acceptable. I'm still running glass around, but am desperate enough to consider alternatives!

...however I think this solution isn't resistant to fogging up and humidity problems unless seals are included.

Thank you brother

I've had the strongest T handle rubber straps for a while. Work well but 2 issues:
Cutting through the metal around the hatch area to access backside of outer skin can be tough. That steel is hard.
At speed, my handles come off because the hatch compresses. I'm working on placing something firm in the hatch pin depressions to reduce the compression.

I'd suggest getting the lighter strength handles because they stretch more and should stay connected.

Interesting topic - I deleted the hatch motor, and just attached a handle to a cable that is attached to the existing hatch cable. The handle comes out the bottom of the hatch area. This works, but it's isn't a great solution, because the angle at which the new cable pulls on the existing cable isn't very favorable, so it takes quite a tug, while simultaneously pushing up on the hatch from below, to get the hatch to pop open.

Could those who have gone to external closure approaches please post some pictures showing how you've installed them?

To Noah's comment about the fogging issue with MAGK944's solution (which looks really elegant), I'm not following why this would be a problem. Why couldn't the stock hatch seal be retained? Also, how is the lower plate that the hood pin is bolted to attached to the car? And is this a 3/16" poly hatch window, or 1/8*? As stout as that strap looks, I'm guessing 1/8". Thanks.

very short pieces of 1/2" PVC sprinkler pipe look about perfect as long as the hatch pin "cones" are 5/8" or less diameter?

Thanks - I would imagine the stock latch pins were retained, and the central brace-mounted hood pin was for extra insurance, correct?

Actually no, they were removed but you can just see in the photo that it also uses those rubber strap clamps for added support. Really though, the stock hatch pins are mostly deleted on track cars I’ve seen as they are useless.

Ah, I didn't catch that, but the point is still the same - this car uses three attachment points. I still have my stock hatch pins, and they are holding onto the hatch with a death grip that takes some real effort to overcome, so in my case, there doesn't seem to be any hurry to replace them with a different approach.

On a track car the reason those pins alone are useless is that they sometimes can become dislodged over bumps and the like and then the hatch opens. That will spoil your day on a track, so most folk don’t rely on the pins and fit other, more secure methods of holding the hatch closed.

Ive also found that even if you adjust the pins just right to seal tight but still work perfectly, both opening easily and holding the hatch firmly closed, you will still need to adjust them a few times a year as the seasons change. Those pins tend to go out of adjustment as the weather changes and it’s just impractical to spend time on getting the adjustment right on a track car. It seems like you’ve adjusted yours to keep the hatch closed at the expense of opening easily, it’s definitely a fine tolerance to get them right but if that works for you then that’s ok
