Default Belt noise after timing and balance shaft belts changed

1987 Porsche 944 Turbo had a new timing belt and balance shaft belt installed. Car sounds fine under idle. When reving engine, it has a screeching sound. The installer says this is common. He took covers off and the tensions appeared to be correct.

He took off balance shaft belt and the noise went away. Shop owner says quality of balance shaft belt isn’t as good. I told him to put old one on! What should I do?

put the new one on, make sure its tensioned right (much looser than the timing belt).
it will be noisy for the first few days as it sort of breaks in.

if the b/s belt wines, it is too tight, otherwise the balance shaft tensioner or rollers are going bad (if they were not replaced)

He said screeching sound, not whine.

Maybe it's just an accessory belt squeal...?

Also, if you tension the belt eccentric in the wrong direction, it can rub on the plastic cover at the bottom.

What I have done is adjust the belts with the engine running. If they’re to tight or to loose they will whine. There is a small area of tension on the belts where there is “no whine” when adjusting them. VERY SMALL DEGREE!!! Automatic tensions don’t always (ever) hit that “quiet belt” tension and well the balance shaft belt is a loud one if not in that small range of “quiet belt” tension. Just be careful if you decide to approach this tactic. I don’t believe it’s OSHA approved.

anyone who doesnt' replace all the rollers when doing a belt job should be shot in the face with the old dead ball bearings.

Then there’s that infamous drawing to guide balance belt tension. To me, the top indication suggests the belt’s teeth touch the roller. Indeed, after I set it like that, my noise went away (unless car sits for a long time then it comes back but only for a brief time at startup). A confusing image though!
