Compression Test Cold Engine
Engine out of car, no intake manifold. Any information of value from doing a cold engine compression test? Can a leak down test on a cold engine be performed?
Records show the previous owner had the head decked and new head gasket 25k mi ago. No reason to pull the head just for peace of mind as the car ran well prior. I’m in the process of new belts rollers water pump, seals and rod bearings. Engine is currently at 156k mi.

You can do a leak down test just like you would normally. Compression test may be a little harder to get results being you probably don't have a way to spin the engine fast enough. I suppose you could attach the bell housing and starter, use a battery charger to get the starter to roll the engine over fast enough. Other than that do compression when the engine is back in the car, not tearing into it while it's out right?

Absolutely pointless doing it on a cold engine, nothing has expanded and sealed so the readings won’t be true. Only useful doing a cold engine if confirming a major failure like a head gasket or bent valves.
