So I've been holding out on this to see if my Brother in Law would actually come through with the title. He is a great guy as I mentioned, but sometimes these details (like having a title) somehow are lost on him. So I told him to find the title and send it to me, and I left it up to him basically if I were to become a 944 owner!

So last week, the title showed up in my mailbox! It's ON! I am making plans now to ship the car, hopefully in August. I have a small family vacation next week, then will begin in earnest to arrange transport.

Check local Ford/Chevy dealers, a lot of times they have cars coming with an open slot on the hauler.

So I am seeing transport costs in the 1500$ range, and that is money I'd much rather spend on the car, not just getting it to me!
I have a tow dolly, a small truck and an adventurous retired co-pilot (my dad).

Can I tow this car with the back wheels on the ground? Should I disconnect or remove driveshafts prior to doing this to prevent the trans from spinning (1700 miles)?

Rent a full trailer from Uhaul.

The trailer they rent is very good, low center of gravity load and they tow great.

Only thing you might run into trouble with is, they want to know weight of car and tow capacity of vehicle you are towing with when you pick it up, so if your two vehicle is too light, either pick trailer up with something else or rent another truck to two with.

Still, 1/5 the $1500 shipping fee.

Agreed get the U-Haul trailer if you can. I always hate towing an empty trailer they bounce around and make a horrible noise.

You will love the engineering on these cars as you eye that $2 part you need to replace and then figure out you need to disassemble 1/3 of the motor to get at it. Hopefully you are still young and a contortionist as it is valuable. So is a lift.

I pulled the trigger on professional shipping service. I was able to get the price down to $1120 door to door from Utah to Ohio. Car should be picked up tomorrow, and delivered Friday 8/30/18. Looking forward to it. I've been busy as a mad man preparing for this completing other projects at break neck speed. I've neglected most of my house duties, and have a few projects backing up there as well. I think I may just "receive" the Porsche, and then look at it for a while as I catch up. I installed heat in the garage this year so I'm hoping that it will be much more tolerable out there this year. We will see.

Congrats!

One thing you could do piecemeal for cheap and as you have time, and get lots of family support for, would be to fully wetsand, compound, polish, and wax the exterior. I just did this on my '86, and you'd be amazed how much 32 year old weathered paint can improve. When the family sees this (esp. if you Shanghai them into contributing their own elbow grease, like Tom Sawyer and the whitewashed fence), they'll get behind the project.

Great save - big picture most stuff on these cars is reasonable compared to modifying anything nowadays and they have tractor like simplicity. Good luck!

^^ Too true; though some of the parts are definitely a lot more expensive then $2. Your toolbox will slowly fill with a bunch of oddball low profile/stubby tools, adapters, swivels, extensions that try to fit in the narrow access spaces we are provided with.
