Default Stiff clutch pedal - once in a while...

I have a strange behavior with the clutch pedal.
Rarely during driving events, the clutch becomes extremely stiff. It feels like it cannot be moved at all.
If I release the pedal and try again, it works normally.
This happens typically once or twice during each d.e. (out of hundreds of gear changes...)
I suspect it has to do with excessive heat, but even then, it is not predictable.
Does anyone has an idea why it happens and how to eliminate it?

I've been underneath looking at my clutch pedal assembly and I noticed that the big spring at the top is unsecured; it kinda just floats there in a slot. There's tons of grease on it.. but.. I can see that if it was dry, it would get stiff or jammed sometimes?

There's a hole in that little rod.. I don't know what's supposed to be there, a wire I think, or a cotter pin? I got nothing
