Can the Shift Rod be removed without removing trans?
I may have a cross threaded alignment bolt on my shifter to shift linkage rod and would like to replace it if I can do it without removing trans again.
Thanks!

I think more then the trans has to come out. I think the exhaust and heat shields then the torque tube with shifter insulation as well as the shifter itself need to be removed as a unit. Or that's how I do it. Don't forget the rear suspension. You didn't think it was a big job did you? Yea me neither, apparently that's above the torque tube which means it went in as a first item installed on chassis.

Yes it can be done.I have done it, very fiddly... Remove ex and pull out all the foam ( replace later) all hangers out and persuade trans to one side with ratchet strap, I believe I dropped it out the pass side so trans needs to go to the driver side a bit. I think I disconnected just one half shaft if I recall , good luck. !

Might be what I end up doing if the rod threads are too messed up. Pulling the shift linkage is way easier and the machine shop is right down the road. I hope the linkage shaft is thick enough to have enough threads to bite and hold. I’m worried that thread repair might not leave enough meat for the new screw and don’t want that shaft coming loose obviously.

How did you get it out of the transaxle/bell housing hole?

Once you free it up around the shifter, you can slide the shaft forwards quite a ways. It does come out the front of the car, but I'm not sure how much stuff you have to remove to get it out. The transmission can almost definitely stay in, but the foam has to come out.

The foam will only get damaged if it is old and brittle.......like my second build.
The one I just took out of he RAGE2 car stayed together....not sure if it is the original foam, but there are old pics online when the car was taken apart by the previous builder.

To pull the transmission, you have to push the rod into the foam and then forward at least 30cm. I found this pretty tough to do; I got it far enough, but needed to use large pliers to move it and eventually it seemed to just butt up against something
