Agree 100%. Also, there is a large body of knowledge and experience around modifying and racing these engines. I think it's a great idea, and would love to see someone with a 924, 944, or 968 in need of a rebuild give it a go as an alternative.

i love the concept of the 1.8T and the HUGE amount of space it opens up in front of engine.
plus they are endlessly available...

LOL

Looks like Max's car (MaxEnergy)

About to venture off on a 968 build with an ash burn + caustic dip on a bare tub.

1st time I've ever had a base this good to start from.

Going for P1 car USA nationally in SP3 Porsche Club Racing.

Gonna be fun.

Found this...
Under $400 USD for a RWD VW1.8T bellhousing made to fit a BorgWarner/Tremec T5 trans.
Should be easy enough to get an adapter made from T5 to 944 torque tube...

Great find. I wonder if a 968-style window could be added to this bellhousing, to make clutch jobs easy.

Did I just read someone complain about a lack of frontal crash protection after a car lost 1000-1200lbs? Really? Most of any factory crash protection is deleted in a race car and replaced by a roll cage and safety devices. I would certainly not venture out onto the street in the car after removing the door beams and a front bumper support for the sake of lightness and you would be foolish to do the same...

What they have done is amazing, the main obstacles of getting a 951 below 2300lbs is the torque tube and torsion bar carrier. Once you've done away with those, its much easier to get the car to a competitive weight. 400+whp in an 1850lb track car is a serious weapon that not just anyone can handle.

Awesome, thanks for sharing!

But, I wonder why they only released a kit for the 944NA/924S models . . . . . the 951 has a different bellhousing than the NA, but the same torque tube.

I guess I'll have to ask them myself.

na bellhousings are cheap and plentiful. Disappointed their “kit” is just the flywheel and bellhousing adapter, surprised there are no motor mounts in the base kit. Still I suppose they will sell a bunch of “add-ons” like intake, plenum, brakes, etc

any comparisons with similarly modified 944 turbo engines? 2.5l / 3.0ltr race cars. I would like to see some lap time differences to have a good comparison. What tracks do the owners of the motorwerks cars go to

I would think the weight advantage with the 1.8T engine would be impossible for anything with a 2.5/3.0 ltr to overcome, considering it appears that the two engines can put out comparable levels of power and torque. I wonder if they'd ever do a kit for a 968 - seems unlikely, given the very low sales volume of the 968.

I don't think thats always the case Cloud968. That why lap times are a great indication of outright chassis and engine performance. An engine that has a 3000 or 4000 rpm power band with similar power and torque values will usually dominate an engine with a 1000rpm power band. which is what usually occurs with a small capacity engine being pushed to the edge. If you wanted to put the engine in your 968 i would think just sourcing the relevant 944 parts to suit would be fine as almost all the 944 parts can be fitted to the 968.
Regards
Sean

There's no replacement for displacement.
