Availability looks damn near impossible for correct sizes this side of the pond. Are there options in GB? Has anyone shipped from England? DOT issues?

so.... this isn't exactly what I'm doing right now, but it is what I would probably try if my current tires were dead...for the moment I'm milking two sets of RE11s shared between my 951 and 911.

If you go to tirerack and shop by brand, look up the Nexen N FERA SUR4G... this is one of the 200 tread wear autocross tires that's supposed to be pretty decent. It is offered in 205 and 225 x 16" sizes, however if you click on specs and look at the measured section width, the 225 is over 9" with just under 9" tread width. It's really big for a 225. the 205 is also called out as being really wide. My gut is you could get 205 and 225 stagger and would be in good shape. The rear might be a little stretched, but if the stated measurements are correct, I don't think it would look silly. I have a local friend who is ordering a pair of 225s for test fitting relatively soon.

If you can consider R compound tires then Kumho Exsta V70 comes in the sizes you need. Atleast here in Europa. Very grippy tire and comes in soft, medium, hard and are street legal. On my -89 Turbo Cup I have 245 fronts and 265 rears on the magnesium 16" phonies if you want wider tires.

I don't think the Kumho Exsta V70 is available in US. The front 225/50/16 has plenty of options. The rear 245/45/16 is the challenge. There are however options.The RE-11 Auto-Werks mentioned is an excellent choice but now discontinued in 245/45 but still some stock out there if you hunt around. I just bought a spare set. The other option is Toyo R888 and R888R. Really good dry grip and not as bad in the wet as people say but they wear quick and go off even quicker and are VERY noisy. Toyo T1R is a road orientated tyre and is very average in my opinion. I have them on my Silver Rose and hate them. Interesting new option has recently become avaialble Pirelli Trofeo R. This is a very high spec tyre and I've just ordered a set to give a go. Reviews I've read suggest that they wear quick but perform well.

Yes, but if you search for the car, the tires that come back are either very sub optimal for performance, or are so performance targeted that they won't be OK on the street. You have to think outside the box and compromise to get really good street rubber for 16" wheels.

The R888 is something to consider, but I had a set a loong time ago and wasn't impressed. Old feedback on that tire was; if it's raining you need to park the car, or crash it. not sure if the new compound and tread design is any better.

Toyo T1R is another 245/45-16 option, but are mediocre and run narrow.

FWIW, I use the CS wheels in the winter (but never drive the car in snow/ice/salt) and made the mistake of trying to stretch 225/50 A/S tires on the 9" rears...looked and felt awful.

I now have 245/50-16 Falken Ziex A/S and they at least get me through 'til it warms up enough for summer tires.

Did you check the link? Pirelli P Zero and Toyo Proxes are not bad options.

I run Barum on the 944S2 (16" D90) and Bridgestone RE050 on the 944T (17" C2T), myself. No driving in slush or snow, though.
